Now comes the test for Dems: household budget relief

Democrats campaigned on voters' price frustrations. Now they're tasked with delivering relief that voters can actually feel.

Economy

Democrats won the midterms on voter frustration with <a class="gtmContentClick" data-vars-link-text="high prices" data-vars-click-url="https://www.axios.com/economy/inflation" data-vars-content-id="268ec05d-51fd-4453-b622-170245b5de92" data-vars-headline="Now comes the test for Dems: household budget relief" data-vars-event-category="story" data-vars-sub-category="story" data-vars-item="in_content_link" href="https://www.axios.com/economy/inflation" target="_self">high prices</a>. Now they face the same problem that sank Republicans: Americans want lower prices, and there is little that policymakers can do to deliver them quickly. Why it matters: Prices for necessities like groceries and gas can fall in a healthy economy. But the kind of broad price declines that would reverse years of price gains would likely come with job losses and falling incomes, leaving households worse off than before.<ul><li>It sets up an early test for the incoming Democratic-controlled Congress and Democrats in statehouses across the country: delivering relief that voters can actually feel in their household budgets.</li></ul>

Democrat locked in Deep South Senate stunner

Colom is already making history, even though the race remains too close to call.

Politics & Policy

One of the biggest nail-biters of the <a class="gtmContentClick" data-vars-link-text="2026 election" data-vars-click-url="https://www.axios.com/2026/11/04/midterm-election-winners-losers-results" data-vars-content-id="985724ce-dc61-4ad3-a348-b103d9c02cda" data-vars-headline="Democrat locked in Deep South Senate stunner" data-vars-event-category="story" data-vars-sub-category="story" data-vars-item="in_content_link" href="https://www.axios.com/2026/11/04/midterm-election-winners-losers-results" target="_self">2026 election</a> isn&#x27;t playing out in a purple state, but crimson Mississippi, where Democrat <a class="gtmContentClick" data-vars-link-text="Scott Colom" data-vars-click-url="https://www.axios.com/2026/10/21/mississippi-senate-competitive-hyde-smith-colom" data-vars-content-id="985724ce-dc61-4ad3-a348-b103d9c02cda" data-vars-headline="Democrat locked in Deep South Senate stunner" data-vars-event-category="story" data-vars-sub-category="story" data-vars-item="in_content_link" href="https://www.axios.com/2026/10/21/mississippi-senate-competitive-hyde-smith-colom" target="_self">Scott Colom</a> is trying to pull off a Magnolia State upset. The big picture: It&#x27;s one of the most remarkable currents of Tuesday&#x27;s blue wave. The race pitted Colom, a Democratic district attorney powered by grassroots clout, against incumbent Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith in a state Trump won by some 23 points in 2024.

Business

Tech stocks plunged Thursday in the most visible sign yet that investors are growing worried about a slowdown in the AI boom. The latest: The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite index was down 4.7% at 3 p.m., with just an hour left in trading. The broader stock market was also down sharply. <ul><li>The sell-off is shaping up to be the stock market&#x27;s worst showing since the <a class="gtmContentClick" data-vars-link-text="April 2025 tariff panic" data-vars-click-url="https://www.axios.com/2025/04/03/stock-market-tariffs-trump-trade-war" data-vars-content-id="5f8e0f16-116f-4699-9fc6-ab7a073801de" data-vars-headline="Tech stocks tumble as election rattles AI trade" data-vars-event-category="story" data-vars-sub-category="story" data-vars-item="in_content_link" href="https://www.axios.com/2025/04/03/stock-market-tariffs-trump-trade-war" target="_self">April 2025 tariff panic</a>.</li></ul>

Vance takes a step toward 2028 in MAGA power play

The vice president's path to 2028 presidential campaign demands a delicate political calculation.

DOJ investigates Arizona voter drives days before election

A former GOP election official questions the timing.

Election

Katie Hobbs wins reelection in Arizona governor's race

Hobbs' victory keeps Arizona's governor's office in Democratic hands and denies Republicans a major pickup.

News

Katie Hobbs</a> defeated Republican Andy Biggs to win a second term, keeping the battleground state&#x27;s governor&#x27;s office in Democratic hands, the AP projects. Why it matters: Hobbs has acted as a check on the Republican-controlled Legislature for the past four years, but with Democrats poised to potentially win both the House and Senate, she and her party could have a tremendous impact.

Democrats again seek elusive control of Legislature

A few districts will determine if Democrats win the Legislature for the first time since the 1960s.

Arizona Democrats have gotten used to saying &quot; This could be our year&quot; as they try to win <a class="gtmContentClick" data-vars-link-text="control of the Legislature" data-vars-click-url="https://www.axios.com/local/phoenix/2024/06/24/legislative-races-to-watch-arizona-primary-2024" data-vars-content-id="3bea28bf-d0d9-43cf-a28c-ccd3a257c945" data-vars-headline="Democrats again seek elusive control of Legislature" data-vars-event-category="story" data-vars-sub-category="story" data-vars-item="in_content_link" href="https://www.axios.com/local/phoenix/2024/06/24/legislative-races-to-watch-arizona-primary-2024" target="_self">control of the Legislature</a> — and hopes are high that 2026 could finally be their year. Why it matters: With Gov. New voter ID system could speed up counting of early ballots

30% of Maricopa County voters who delivered early ballots in the primary used the new option.

Democrats eye strongly Republican 2nd Congressional District

Jonathan Nez is getting a lot more support than he did against against Eli Crane in 2024.

An unexpectedly competitive race in a congressional district that President Trump easily won by double digits two years ago could spell trouble as Republicans look to fend off a Democratic wave. Why it matters: Significant spending by both parties in the 2nd Congressional District, which covers most of rural, northern Arizona and extends into northern Pinal County, suggests that even districts normally considered to be safe Republican territory could be up for grabs.
