Downtown Phoenix's historic Ellis building will become Marriott hotel

The historic Ellis building downtown was sold for $10.3 million earlier this month and will become a Marriott hotel.

Why it matters: The project will give new life to the old office building, which was built in 1922 and has been vacant for several years.

Driving the news: The building, located at 135 N. 2nd Ave., was sold on Oct.6 by Equus Development Corp. to developer Aperture Hotels.

Aperture's website lists the Ellis building as a future Tribute Portfolio hotel under the Marriott brand, with 100 planned rooms.
The Tribute Portfolio consists of independent, boutique hotels, often in unique structures.

What's next: No timeline was given for the project, which will involve extensive renovation of the former office building.

A previous effort by Equus to convert the Ellis into residential use was unsuccessful, per the Arizona Republic.
