The Melrose District, famously Phoenix's "gayborhood," is hosting free Pride festivities on Saturday.

Why it matters: With the Phoenix Pride organization mired in bankruptcy and scaling back its own event, the event offers a chance for residents to celebrate LGBTQ+ culture in the neighborhood most defined by it.

Zoom in: Officially called the "Pride in Melrose Festival," the event will take place noon-6pm at Title 9 Sports Grill and the neighboring Boycott Bar.

There will be a community stage, live entertainment, kid-friendly activities and local vendors.
Boycott will host a singing competition, time TBD.

The intrigue: Title 9 will have a Hot Wing Challenge at 2pm, promising $500 to the first person to finish 15 spicy wings "clean to the bone."

What they're saying: "When we saw Pride moving more toward downtown, we wanted to make sure Melrose still had a place where our community could come together and celebrate," Audrey Corley, the owner of both venues, said in a press announcement.
