WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange said he "plead guilty to journalism" in his first public appearance on Tuesday since being freed from a high-security U.K. prison.

Why it matters: Assange expressed concern before human rights officials from the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and alleged heightened censorship and retaliation since his arrest for one of the biggest leaks of classified information in U.S. history.

Iran launched around 180 ballistic missiles toward Israel in a two-wave attack on Tuesday that U.S. and Israeli officials say was largely repelled.

The big picture: This was Iran's largest-scale attack ever against Israel. Most of the missiles were intercepted by Israel and the U.S., and there are no reports of deaths inside Israel. One Palestinian civilian was reportedly killed in the West Bank.

1. Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado became the first Latin American person awarded the Václav Havel Prize yesterday.

• The prize given by the European Union honors those fighting for human rights and consists of a grant of 60,000 euros.
• Machado said in her acceptance speech, transmitted from Venezuela, that she dedicates the prize to all those fighting for democracy in her country.

2. Bolivia declared a disaster warning yesterday due to continuing wildfires that have spread to two natural reserves and other areas.

• With the declaration, the government of President Luis Arce will be able to dedicate more federal funds to putting out the fires and for recovery efforts.

Carmen Martínez, a Venezuelan doctor, now cares for small birds, which she says are among the most helpless animals.

State of play: Martínez created the NGO Amaranta Casa de Colibríes years back to set up a forest reserve to maintain the ecosystem of hummingbirds and almost 200 other small-bird species.
