Sunday marked five years since the first Axios Atlanta newsletter arrived in readers' inboxes.
- If you've been with us since the beginning or just started reading, thank you.
Why it matters: One of the best ways to understand this dynamic city we call home is with quality journalism, and Axios is charting a new sustainable path to help provide coverage.
Zoom in: We've written 1,256 issues and almost as many situational awareness-es and outros detailing what we ate the night before, our growing house-plant collection, our children and pets and occasional moments of zen.
The big picture: Over the past five years we've reported on natural disasters, Barbie-themed go-karts, a controversial public safety training center, affordable housing, oddball history of metro Atlanta and that unprecedented water outage.
- We've posted more than 2,900 stories online, just a handful of what we've produced for every newsletter issue.
By the numbers: We've taken Phoenix 3000 to dozens of spots both easy-to-identify and esoteric and received many multiples of reader responses (most of which were right!).
Fun fact: Just over the past two years, the word "peach" has appeared in 253 editions, more than any other word, followed by election, housing, restaurant and water. (We honestly don't remember writing about peaches that much.)
Thomas' favorite story: It's unfair to ask me to pick one. But OK, I really enjoyed writing about a gathering of luxury bottled water sommeliers in Atlanta.
Kristal's favorite stories: I can't pick just one, so mine are Who TF Did I Marry?! viral TikTok series, the "Atlanta Way" of doing things, the chaotic scene outside the Fulton County Jail when President Trump was booked into Rice Street, your parking preferences and Sandy Springs' 20th anniversary.
The bottom line: We're grateful we can cover the city that we call home and write for engaged and civic-minded readers, all roughly 140,000 of you.
- Whether you were here from the beginning or signed up along the way — or just started reading — we thank you.
- Here's to many more years waking up together.
