Erriyon Knighton, a phenom sprinter from our own Hillsborough High School, almost secured a national title with a 19.69-second 200 at the U.S. track and field championship finals in Oregon on Sunday. 

But he was beat at the finish by Noah Lyles, who clocked 19.67 seconds.

"Job's not finished. It's never finished," Knighton said after the race.

State of play: Knighton has the potential to be an international track superstar, and even the fastest man in the world, if his coaches can keep him healthy and grounded.

That's the takeaway from a recent New York Times profile of the 18-year-old, who finished fourth in the 200 at the Tokyo Olympics last summer and has beaten records set by a young Usain Bolt.

The intrigue: Knighton's coaches are trying to help the teen set record speeds, in part, by letting him catch his breath, the Times reports. They've been selective about the number of races Knighton participates in this season.

"If we want to have longevity in the sport, we can't beat him up," coach Mike Holloway told the Times. "People forget that Bolt was really good at 16 and 17 and when he was 21, 22, he was unbeatable."

What to watch: Knighton will compete in the world championships in Oregon next month.

The Sarasota Herald-Tribune is currently prohibited from naming the Sarasota County sheriff's deputies involved in the fatal shooting of an elderly man during an attempt to evict him from his condo in April.

And a judge said Tuesday that he'll rule within a week on whether an emergency injunction preventing the newspaper from printing the deputies' names should stay in place.

What's happening: The state attorney's office previously provided the last names of the deputies involved in the shooting to the Herald-Tribune in response to a routine public records request.

Yes, but: When the paper asked for more information, the sheriff’s office quickly sought an emergency injunction to keep the names secret, citing Florida's Marsy's Law.

In a ruling many are calling an unconstitutional prior restraint of the press, a judge granted the injunction June 10 and set a hearing for yesterday.

What they're saying: The paper's editorial board and activist groups like Women's Voices of Southwest Florida say the law, which was meant to protect the privacy of crime victims, is being used by police to keep secret the names of officers involved in shootings.

"If there is nothing to hide, why go to these lengths to hide the identity of a public servant who took the life of an individual during an eviction process?" Women's Voices of Southwest Florida wrote in an emailed statement. "The community has a right to this information."

The other side: Attorneys for the sheriff's office and the deputies said at the hearing Tuesday that Marsy's Law applies to protecting law enforcement involved in such incidents, who are at risk of threats or harassment.

Patrick Duggan, the Sheriff's Office's attorney, said that deputies worrying about whether their personal information may be released could cause them to hesitate in situations that could potentially put the public at risk.

Tampa Bay nudists have been working on their groundstroke.

State of play: Pickleball — that mash-up of tennis, badminton and ping-pong — has exploded in popularity lately.

Pickleball participation grew by 21.3% between 2019 and 2020, prompting the Economist to declare it "the fastest growing sport in America," as Axios Sports Kendall Baker reports. 

And demand for courts is exploding, with cities building new facilities and private clubs opening new courts all over.

The rub: It only makes sense, then, that the sport would also be growing in popularity among those who call Tampa Bay's nudist communities home.

Clothing-optional resorts are advertising their pickleball facilities, holding tournaments, and putting in more courts to meet the demand.

"Nude pickleball is beating the pants off its competition," wrote Frank Cerabino for Pickler, a pickleball news and information website and newsletter, in a story headlined "Nude pickleball is taking off."

Zoom in: At Caliente Club and Resorts in Land O' Lakes, the popular Nightfall Pickleball is held every Monday at 5pm. "Grab your balls!" the flyer says. "It's time for pickleball!"

Pickleball popularity has grown so much at clothing-optional Eden RV Resort in Hudson that they're getting rid of the shuffleboard court to add another pickleball court.

What they're saying: "We tell people, just bring your tennis shoes," Mike Sullivan, a USA Pickleball ambassador and a resident of Cypress Cove Nudist Resort in Kissimmee, told Pickler.

Yes, butt: "All of them balls in play could be confusing!" someone called Two Bills posted on the Talk of the Villages message board.

Gov. Ron DeSantis, who won the Florida governorship by less than 1% and whose name was virtually unknown to greater America just a few years ago, is now rising in presidential polls and presents voters with a quicker, sharper version of Donald Trump's angry style of politics. 

That's the bottom line in a more than 10,000-word profile of DeSantis by Dexter Filkins in this week's New Yorker magazine.

The big picture: Filkins positions DeSantis as a new conservative folk hero, unafraid of battling the left and presenting himself as the only one brave enough to do it.

And the kid from Dunedin has grown so popular within the GOP that, in a few polls, he comes out ahead of Trump in the race for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. 

Zoom in: Filkins reveals that DeSantis has what some describe as a photographic memory, and could hold in-depth conversations about medical research with epidemiologists. 

Those who work closely with DeSantis say that he is unique among elected officials in his disregard for public opinion and the press.

The rub: Trump takes credit for DeSantis' win in 2018. Trump also told Filkins repeatedly that he and DeSantis had a "very good relationship," adding, "I'm proud of Ron."

Others say that tension between the two has hardened into resentment. "He won’t kiss the ring," a political leader who sees DeSantis often told Filkins.

What they're saying: "It's hard to tell how much of Ron DeSantis is ideological and how much is opportunism," Filkins tells David Remnick in the New Yorker Radio Hour. 

"He sounds like Trump, except that he speaks in complete sentences. And he's very, very articulate, and very, very quick, but he's competing for the same constituency. So, he's very angry at the elite, even though he went to Harvard and Yale. He's very angry at Washington … And so he's kind of rallying the white, working class of Florida — of which the numbers are still quite large — and he's angry."

The U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling Friday overturning Roe v. Wade, effectively ending all federal protections on abortion.  

What it means for Florida: Abortions are currently legal in Florida up to the 24th week of pregnancy. But starting July 1, a new law set to take effect will ban all abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy in the state. 

The big picture: Abortion rights are protected under the state's constitution due to a Florida Supreme Court precedent that "recognized that the right of privacy in the state constitution protects abortion," according to the Center for Reproductive Rights.

Yes, but: In red states where there's an anti-abortion majority of lawmakers and politicians, lawsuits could be brought to challenge these decisions, Axios' Oriana Gonzalez reports.

State of play: Gov. Ron DeSantis signed into law in April a 15-week abortion ban, which has no exceptions for rape or incest. It only allows for abortions to be performed past the 15 weeks if there's a medical emergency or a "fatal fetal abnormality."

Abortions must also be reported to the state, along with information on why the procedure was provided.

Yes, but: Abortion providers and a Florida synagogue have both sued in attempt to challenge the 15-week ban.

Planned Parenthood, the Center for Reproductive Rights and the American Civil Liberties Union represented providers in a lawsuit filed against the state earlier this month. They argue the ban violates the state's constitutional protections and the privacy rights of Florida women.

Congregation L'Dor Va-Dor, a synagogue located in Boynton Beach, filed a lawsuit weeks later, arguing that the Florida law violates religious freedom rights.

What to watch: Both lawsuits are expected to be bundled into a single case, and a hearing on the challenge is likely in the coming weeks, the Associated Press reports.
