Stormy Daniels' lawyer and apparent 2020 presidential hopeful Michael Avenatti tweeted Sunday that he will lead a "resistance rally" in Texas in October to counter President Trump's planned campaign event for Sen. Ted Cruz.

The big picture: Avenatti, who said last month that he was "seriously" considering running for president, joins Parkland survivor David Hogg in targeting the Trump-Cruz rally with an attempt to needle the president.

The father of Mollie Tibbetts, the Iowa woman allegedly killed by an undocumented immigrant from Mexico, called on politicians to stop using her murder to advance their political agenda in an emotional op-ed in the Des Moines Register on Saturday.

"The person who is accused of taking Mollie’s life is no more a reflection of the Hispanic community as white supremacists are of all white people. To suggest otherwise is a lie. Justice in my America is blind."

The big picture: Tibbetts' op-ed came a day after Donald Trump Jr. wrote a column in the same paper lambasting Democrats' response to Mollie's murder. And former House Speaker Newt Gingrich emailed Axios' Mike Allen last month to make ensure the story was getting coverage.

Donald Trump Jr. is about to embark on a fall fundraising push for midterm candidates in what he calls "regular America ... you know, everywhere between New York and Malibu." But first he played the Hamptons.

What's happening: He and his girlfriend, former Fox News anchor Kimberly Guilfoyle, posed for endless selfies at a pair of August events for Rep. Lee Zeldin, including a $300-a-person dinner party in Nissequogue where the attire was: "Comfortable Causal. Shorts are acceptable."

President Trump accused Bloomberg of leaking off the record comments on NAFTA negotiations with Canada, but Toronto Star reporter Daniel Dale, who broke the story, refuted Trump's accusations on Saturday, saying "none of the Bloomberg interviewers was my source."

Former Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos claims President Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions encouraged him to continue efforts to set up a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Washington Post reports.

Why it matters: Papadopoulos' account conflicts with what Attorney General Jeff Sessions original told the House Judiciary Committee. Sessions said he pushed back against the idea of meeting with Putin and that he thought it "may have been improper."

President Trump said in a Saturday tweet that there is "no political necessity" to include Canada in a new trade deal between the U.S. and Mexico — and he threatened to terminate NAFTA entirely if Congress interferes with negotiations.

The state of play: In the midst of ongoing negotiations between the U.S. and Canada, Trump said he is refusing to grant Canada any concessions in negotiations. Talks between the two sides are scheduled to resume on Wednesday.

Meghan McCain, daughter of the late Senator John McCain, gave a powerful goodbye to her father on Saturday, remembering his legacy and indirectly criticizing one of the most notably absent people: President Trump.
