Utah Gov. Spencer Cox wins second term

The big picture: Utah's gubernatorial race was rife with unsubstantiated claims of election fraud, prominently from Cox's primary challenger state Rep. Phil Lyman, after the governor survived his party's primary in June against ultra-conservative candidates.

By the numbers: Cox and his running mate Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson garnered about 54% of votes compared to King and librarian Rebekah Cumming's 34%, according to unofficial results posted at 10:33pm.

• Lyman, who later launched a campaign as a write-in candidate, received about 7.6% of the vote.

The intrigue: Once viewed as a moderate Republican, Cox has since moved further to the right, endorsing former President Trump and signing laws that banned gender-affirming health care for trans youth and diversity, equity and inclusion offices in public education and government agencies.

• Cox's decision to back Trump following the Pennsylvania assassination attempt came days after he told CNN he would not cast a ballot for the former president. It was a move that even perplexed fellow Republicans.
• He has maintained he would only serve two terms in the governor's office.
• Cox, who hails from Sanpete County, previously served as lieutenant governor under former Gov. Gary Herbert between 2013-2021.
