Tuesday is Earth Day, a day for action to protect the planet, but working to preserve the environment is a practice that Portlanders can engage in year-round.
Why it matters: Portland already has some of the most ambitious climate policies in the country, but it's impossible to commemorate this Earth Day without acknowledging the breadth of cuts to federal environmental programs, said Jana Gastellum, executive director of the Oregon Environmental Council.
- "We can't take any progress or existing protections for granted," Gastellum told Axios. "Don't stay on the sidelines. Get in the game."
Zoom in: Portland has set a goal of reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, though the city is well behind the goal of cutting emissions in half by 2030.
- At the state level, the newly reinstated Climate Protection Program has similar goals.
- But both programs are potentially at risk from an executive order signed by President Trump seeking to stop enforcement of state and local climate policies.
Between the lines: That's why it's crucial to use Earth Day as an opportunity to look for some simple things you can do to make your impact last beyond the holiday, Gastellum said.
- Install a filter on your washer and dryer to cut down on microplastic pollution.
- Look into the many rebates and incentives available in Oregon to make your home more energy efficient, which will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and save you money.
- Get out into nature, not only to remind yourself of why it's worth protecting, but also for the numerous proven health benefits.
What they're saying: "The best way that Oregon can respond is to send a clear message that our commitment is firm — we're going to keep leading," said Nora Apter, Oregon Director for the nonprofit Climate Solutions.
If you go: Of course, having your eye on long-term impact doesn't mean you should pass up the chance for short-term action and there's no shortage of events celebrating Earth Day itself.
- If you're looking for something around Portland, there are litter pickups, plant sales, family-friendly parades and beach cleanups to choose from.
