McDonald's is betting on nostalgia to drive sales with its next rendition of the adult Happy Meals — the "collector's meal."
Why it matters: The limited-time meal — which launches Aug. 13 and comes with a collectible glass — is the fast-food giant's latest attempt to bring consumers back.
- McDonald's $5 meal deal was extended at the majority of restaurants through August.
- Company officials said last week restaurants have experienced a "notable" bump from the promotion.
The big picture: McDonald's special meals in the past, including collaborations with celebrities, have driven sales, created demand and led to nationwide ingredient shortages.
- The adult Happy Meals, released in October 2022, started selling out immediately. The meals' collectible toys quickly landed on eBay and online marketplaces.
McDonald's Collector's Meal release date
Driving the news: McDonald's said Wednesday that the new meal will launch Aug. 13 and be available all day. Each meal will come with one collectible cup.
The meal options include:
- For breakfast hours, a meal with a "Sausage McMuffin with Egg sandwich," hash browns and hot coffee.
- The rest of the day, the Collector's Meal is choice of a 10-piece Chicken McNuggets or a Big Mac sandwich that both come with fries and a soft drink.
Between the lines: Meal prices are set at the individual restaurant level and may vary by location, McDonald's told Axios.
McDonald's collectible cups
Zoom in: The company said the cups "spotlight classic keepsakes that are at the heart of fans' McDonald's experiences," including the Teenie Beanie craze of the '90s.
The six-cup lineup includes:
- A Barbie and Hot Wheels cup
- Beanie Babies
- Coca-Cola designs
- Hello Kitty and Peanuts
- Shrek, Jurassic Park and Minions
- A McDonald's theme that includes Grimace and Boo Buckets in the design.
Yes, but: All the cups will come out at the same time so what cup will be included in a meal is random, McDonald's confirmed to Axios.
