President Trump said Sunday he instructed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to "substantially reduce" U.S. military exercises with South Korea.

The big picture: Trump cited his "very good relationship" with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un for condemning the drills — and also noted on Truth Social that South Korea declined his request to help the U.S. denuclearize Iran.

What he's saying: "These exercises are not only costly, with much of these costs paid for by the United States of America (as usual!), but send a signal that is totally inappropriate and hostile," Trump wrote.

Context: The U.S. and South Korean militaries were due to start regular military drills on Monday in an exercise known as "Ulchi Freedom Shield."

The drills have been held annually under that name since 2022, though the U.S.-South Korea summertime exercises they evolved from date back decades.

Friction point: On Wednesday, North Korea conducted a ballistic missile test for the first time since June, which experts and military officials assessed as an apparent protest against the drills.

The U.S., Japan and South Korea condemned the missile launch.

What we're watching: The Japan-based USS George Washington is being redeployed from the Pacific to the Middle East, where it is expected to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln.

That leaves the U.S. without a Pacific aircraft carrier at the same time that Trump is scaling back from the Korean drills.

New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is laughing off "Woke 1." But she's carrying baggage from the 2020 era of cultural progressivism that some Democrats say is an obstacle to a future presidential run.

Why it matters: AOC's pivot to the cultural center — which she began to roll out last week in a high-profile ABC interview by saying, "Woke 1 was crazy" — is potential damage control for her past remarks about law enforcement, immigration and a range of social issues.

Ocasio-Cortez told ABC that the left's so-called excesses of that period were partly the result of the COVID pandemic and lockdowns.

But she made some of her most controversial remarks before the pandemic hit the U.S. in 2020.

"This is really going to be something that handicaps her, especially with demographics that are culturally more moderate," former Biden White House adviser Yemisi Egbewole told us, pointing to Black voters in the South who have a large voice in Democratic presidential primaries.

Flashback: In the early 2020s, Ocasio-Cortez was one of the most aggressive and well-known advocates for "defunding" the police — an idea that polls have long shown is not popular.

In the summer of 2020, she blasted New York City's government for proposing to cut its police department by only $1 billion. 

"Defunding police means defunding police," she said then. "It does not mean budget tricks or funny math." She added: "The fight to defund policing continues."

In 2019, AOC posted on social media that "we need to have a real conversation about decarceration & prison abolition in this country."

She said that year that some marginalized groups "have no choice but to riot."

And she said at an event in 2021: "I want to abolish our carceral system that's designed to trap Black and brown men."

On immigration, Ocasio-Cortez sponsored a bill in 2021 and 2023 to decriminalize border crossings. Asked by the New Yorker in 2019 if she would get rid of the Department of Homeland Security, she said: "I think so. I think so."

She repeatedly used language en vogue in elite liberal circles, such as the gender-neutral term "Latinx" in the early 2020s — a word that surveys have found isn't used by the vast majority of Latino Americans.

She used the phrase "menstruating person" in 2021 to be inclusive of the transgender community.

Zoom out: AOC now has shifted her rhetoric but hasn't detailed where she currently stands on many of these politically fraught topics, or what made her change her views on "Woke 1."

Ocasio-Cortez's spokespeople didn't respond to several questions, including what her position is now on defunding the police, whether she supports decriminalizing the border, and if she thinks rioting is sometimes justified.

In her ABC interview, Ocasio-Cortez did say that she doesn't support some Democratic Socialists of America's proposals such as abolishing police and prisons, defunding the Department of Defense and granting amnesty to all immigrants.

The other side: Some Republicans argue that AOC would be a formidable presidential candidate despite her controversial positions in the past.

"To me, she's incredibly dangerous," said GOP pollster Brent Buchanan, noting that AOC has high name recognition and an impressive favorability rating for a nationally known figure who's faced years of attacks.

He shared his polling that shows Ocasio-Cortez is seen favorably by 39% of voters, compared with 42% who view her unfavorably — a rating similar to Secretary of State Marco Rubio's.

Ocasio-Cortez's recent cultural moderation "tells me she's a good politician, because she's doing it now instead of next year," Buchanan added.

Democratic strategist James Carville likewise praised AOC, telling us that "it's always been evident that she's more talented than the rest of them put together," a reference to other members of the "Squad" of House progressives.

Carville said AOC doesn't need to over-explain her changes of heart: "She can say: 'I'm grown,' and people understand that."

Wisconsin's recent gubernatorial primary showed how cultural progressivism can be an albatross for the left — even at a time when economic populism is gaining momentum.

Socialist Francesca Hong lost by just under 4,000 votes after struggling to explain why she previously had called to "cancel Thanksgiving."

AOC declined to endorse Hong — the latest sign of her move to the center.

The big picture: Ocasio-Cortez is far from the only Democratic politician who wants voters to forget about their past cultural positions from the early 2020s.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said last year that "not one person ever in my office has ever used the word Latinx," though he repeatedly did so in 2020.

Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, meanwhile, have walked back their past support for defunding the police.

Hamas leaders reaffirmed their commitment to disarm and demilitarize Gaza in a meeting with President Trump's adviser Jared Kushner in Egypt on Sunday, according to a source with direct knowledge.

Why it matters: Kushner used the rare direct meeting to press Hamas for tangible steps on disarmament, warning that Israel doesn't trust the group to follow through. 

The source described the 90-minute meeting as "very productive" at making sure Hamas takes practical steps to fulfill its commitments.

The White House and Trump's Board of Peace are pushing Hamas and Israel to move to the next phase of the U.S. 20-point peace plan.

Kushner is expected to visit Israel on Monday and meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss "corresponding steps" Israel must take, the source said. 

Behind the scenes: Hamas leaders asked Kushner to tell Trump they remained committed to disarming, the source said.

"We thanked them for the commitment, but we want to see real efforts and not just words," the source added. "It was important for Kushner to lock them into this commitment in person."

Kushner also thanked Hamas leaders for their cooperation and efforts to recover the bodies of all deceased Israeli hostages.

Hamas leaders thanked the Trump administration and the Board of Peace for their efforts to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

Who was there: Board of Peace high representative Nickolay Mladenov and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who is also a member of the board, and Board of Peace senior advisers Aryeh Lightstone and Liran Tancman joined Kushner in the meeting.

Hamas political leader Khalil al-Hayya attended alongside Egyptian intelligence chief Hassan Rashad, Qatari diplomat Ali al-Thawadi and a senior Turkish official.

Flashback: It was Kushner's first meeting with Hamas leaders since the Gaza agreement was reached last October.

Zoom in: Kushner told Hamas leaders they need to take tangible steps on disarmament if they want Israel to take steps of its own, the source said. Those steps include transferring governing authority to the Palestinian technocratic government and ensuring Hamas has no role in Gaza's future governance.

"Kushner stressed to Hamas leaders that the bar is high because the Israeli side doesn't trust them to actually disarm," the source said. "Kushner told them there is no room for negotiations on the disarmament, but if they show real steps the U.S. will do its best to make sure Israel takes steps of its own."

The board also wants Israel to conduct "corresponding steps" in Gaza if Hamas starts disarming and to accelerate humanitarian relief to the enclave.

"There can be no ambiguity: Hamas must relinquish governing authority and all weapons and military infrastructure. And Gaza can never again be a source of terror for Israel," the source said.

Friction point: Hamas leaders expressed frustration about Israeli policy in Gaza, including continued strikes, the source said.

"Kushner pushed back and said that it took them four months to agree to disarm," the source said.

Hamas leaders also said they are ready to hand over governance in Gaza to the Palestinian technocratic government and not interfere once it begins operating in the enclave.

What they're saying: Hamas said after the meeting that it had agreed to the roadmap for the second phase of Trump's plan, citing a permanent ceasefire, a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, sustained humanitarian relief and the beginning of reconstruction efforts.

Hamas accused Israel of failing to implement the first phase of the ceasefire agreement and called on the mediators and the Board of Peace to press Israel to meet its obligations.

The group also praised Trump's role in reaching the ceasefire agreement.

The statement did not explicitly mention disarmament.

What's next: The Board of Peace wants Hamas to begin decommissioning its weapons and military infrastructure, the source said.

If Hamas begins disarming, Israel's "corresponding steps" would include allowing the International Stabilization Force to deploy in Gaza, enabling reconstruction to begin in the Rafah area and discussing initial Israeli troop withdrawals, the source said.

The board also wants Israel to accelerate humanitarian relief to Gaza.

The big picture: Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi told Kushner much of the region's instability in recent years stemmed from Gaza and that stabilizing Gaza would help the broader region, the source said.

Attorney General Todd Blanche refused Sunday to pledge the Justice Department's independence from the White House, saying he would consider President Trump's views on individual prosecutions.

Why it matters: Trump has remade the DOJ, ousting longtime staffers, urging prosecutions of rivals and installing his former lawyer as attorney general. Blanche made the stakes clear: Trump's wishes can shape who gets investigated and prosecuted.

What he's saying: "No, I'm not going to pledge that," Blanche told NBC's "Meet the Press" after Kristen Welker asked whether DOJ would "always act independently" of the White House.

"And no attorney general should ever pledge that," he added.

Zoom in: Blanche said "yes, of course" Trump should have a voice in individual prosecution decisions.

"The president of the United States, the elected president of the United States, says something to me," he said. "And I'm supposed to say to you, 'I would say no.' I mean, that's not the way it works."

Catch up quick: Blanche called it an "extraordinarily false narrative" that Trump tells him, "Go prosecute X or Y." Yet Trump regularly broadcasts whom he wants prosecuted.

Last September, Trump called for prosecutions of former FBI Director James Comey, New York Attorney General Letitia James and Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), writing: "They're all guilty as hell. … JUSTICE MUST BE SERVED, NOW!!!"

The DOJ charged Comey and James, though a judge dismissed those cases. Prosecutors later charged Comey again, over a social media post they say threatened Trump. Comey asked the judge to dismiss the case.

This month, Trump told D.C. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro to revisit a vandalism case she dropped after evidence showed the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool's damage resulted from a flawed installation.

The other side: On "Fox News Sunday," Blanche told Shannon Bream that Trump "would expect me to tell him no" when they disagree legally.

"The president loves disagreement," he said.

Driving the news: Blanche's Sunday interviews capped his first week as attorney general after the Senate confirmed him 50–49.

Days after being sworn in, Blanche warmed up the crowd for Trump at a Long Island event boosting Republican candidates.

His nomination nearly collapsed over a Trump–IRS settlement that created a $1.776 billion "anti-weaponization" fund.

Senators warned that people prosecuted for the Jan. 6 attack, including those who assaulted police, could seek payouts. GOP Sens. John Cornyn and Thom Tillis withheld support until Blanche rescinded the order.

On Sunday, however, Blanche said while the fund is dead, he would not rule out Jan. 6 defendants receiving money through the government's claims process.

Context: This isn't the first time Blanche has rejected a wall between the DOJ and Trump.

In May, he told Congress that DOJ's policy direction comes from Trump: "We take them from the president."

On Steve Bannon's podcast in April, he criticized the idea that "somehow the Department of Justice is independent from the President of the United States. That is not true."

In written answers to Congress, he invoked the Constitution: The president is the head of the executive branch, and the Justice Department falls within that branch.

Flashback: Trump has treated alleged political influence over past attorneys general as scandalous.

In 2016, Trump called it disgraceful that then-Attorney General Loretta Lynch spoke privately with former President Bill Clinton on an airport tarmac.

Senate Judiciary Chair Chuck Grassley demanded an inspector general review of the conversation. That review found no evidence of political bias but called the meeting an error in judgment.

Republicans have also spent years accusing former Attorney General Merrick Garland's DOJ of political weaponization.

Blanche won't pledge DOJ independence from Trump

My wife, Autumn, has spent nearly a quarter of the past four years in ERs and hospitals, untangling and battling three chronic conditions — and a shamefully broken U.S. medical system.

We live in Washington, D.C., with top-rated hospitals in our backyard. Yet her experience has been eye-opening and often horrifying, especially for a nation that spends twice as much on medical care as our rivals.

What it's like: ERs so hauntingly jammed she's often stacked like cargo in hallways, on a stretcher, waiting double-digit hours for care.

Mayo Clinic shows how to fix America’s broken medical system

Well-intentioned and often talented nurses overwhelmed and overworked.

Doctors forbidden from, or uninterested in, working with experts beyond their domain to solve complex conditions. It's random luck if you get a specialist willing to even show up to your hospital room.

You need a forensic detective to hunt down medical records scattered across random portals and hospitals. And then a miracle to get anyone to piece them together for clues. "It feels like riding a stationary bicycle when you need to be somewhere," Autumn says.

And we're the lucky ones, with blue-chip insurance, a sophisticated understanding of the system and resources to attack problems. Most patients don't have those things.

All of this left us infuriated and hopeless — until we landed in a small Minnesota city and glimpsed medical nirvana: the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. It was like discovering a foreign land — or seeing a future that could and should be.

The best part: I soon discovered AI could easily help unlock the best of Mayo for everyone. Dr. Gianrico Farrugia, a gastroenterologist who's president and CEO of the Mayo Clinic, told me he's racing to show the federal government and other hospitals how to replicate the Mayo magic.

How it works: Mayo doctors work as teams. They're paid to heal, not to operate or medicate. Nurses handle four or so patients — fewer than we've experienced at even some of the best hospitals back home.

Everyone is kind and talented. Rooms are clean. Every appointment begins on time. Imaging and blood tests get scheduled immediately, not after months of anxious waiting. Results land instantly in your online portal.

But the real difference-maker: Doctors and patients leverage massive databases of medical information, sorted and analyzed by AI, then channeled into 500 different algorithms to help find cures and better serve patients.

It's a real-time, real-world fusion of man and machine, helping patients get healthier, faster by tapping into superior medical data about you and others with similar conditions.

Consider cases like Autumn's: She has several different things wrong requiring expertise across many domains. Few, if any, humans could piece together this puzzle alone. This is where AI could make a big impact — now.

Mayo recently signed a deal with Microsoft to expand and expedite its own frontier AI model to further scale and refine this work. Both Mayo and Microsoft are fine-tuning the AI with hopes of sharing it broadly.

"None of this works unless health data is arranged maximally for humans and AI agents," Farrugia told me. "What makes it work or scalable is organizing all the knowledge so doctors can use it optimally and so agents can use it optimally, so we get the best data to help patients."

The catch: "I could give this to every hospital — and they can't use it." That's because most hospitals lack the technology, money, systems and focus to use health data drawn from patients and broader pools.

The government needs to force hospitals to change, with "carrots and sticks," Farrugia said. A new data architecture needs to be formed ASAP. Done right, this would be a life-changer for the chronically ill like Autumn, who often get the worst, least coordinated attention.

Here's the kicker: A variety of studies show Mayo is cost-competitive, and works with private insurance as well as Medicare and Medicaid.

It's a national disgrace that a nation so rich, so innovative, provides such crappy care to our sickest Americans. Most pay new Cadillac prices for used Ford Escort outcomes.

This isn't OK: We could simply admit our failure and rebuild the health care system, using Mayo as the base model.

Doctors are paid flat salaries. No bonuses for more procedures, scans, tests or visits. They're paid to heal. American health care's original sin is fee-for-service: We pay most doctors for volume, so we get volume. Mayo removed the incentive to overtreat, and the entire culture reorganized around the question that should drive all medicine: What does this patient actually need?

Doctors work as teams, not individual know-it-alls. Mayo practices multidisciplinary medicine. So gastroenterologists, liver specialists and surgeons all work together to evaluate complex cases like Autumn's. The doctors do this in days, under one roof, with constant communication. Compare that to the standard American experience: months of siloed referrals, repeated tests and specialists who, maddeningly, never speak to each other.

Patient-first culture. This was the most striking thing to us: Every person from surgeons to desk clerks seemed caring and kind. They were obsessed with understanding Autumn and smartly diagnosing her before recommending any actions. As someone who started and has run two companies, I can tell you: Cultures are controllable and scalable. We should demand this of every medical institution in America.

And here's proof these principles scale: They aren't unique to Rochester.

Kaiser Permanente pays salaries to its physicians and coordinates care for 12 million members. Cleveland Clinic pays flat salaries with one-year contracts and annual reviews. Geisinger built integrated, team-based care in the hills of rural Pennsylvania, hardly a talent magnet on paper. Intermountain in Salt Lake City shows promise in spreading Mayo-like performance and outcomes elsewhere.

But it's the power of AI that could make the biggest difference and scale this further, the fastest, Farrugia argues.

Mayo's scarcest asset — coordinated diagnostic brilliance based on real data, cases, lab results and patients — is exactly what AI is getting good at. Mayo knows it, running more than 12,000 clinical studies and building its Mayo Clinic Platform to digitize its expertise.

Testing technology: Before we tried Mayo, Autumn's coordinating doctors asked to use AI-assisted recording and transcription. I did the same for the AI agent I built to tackle Autumn's case using Claude. Both of us fed this into systems to make better data-informed calls.

To this day, my personal AI agent has proven smarter than every doctor, other than Mayo's.

Think about what Mayo data changes: A community hospital in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, will never recruit 4,000 Mayo-caliber specialists. It doesn't need to. It could tap into Mayo's expertise and data to instantly help tens of millions of patients.

The harder-to-implement components of scaling Mayo — the talent, the brand, the destination economics — matter far less if the intelligence itself can be tapped by all doctors and patients.

A new health care goal could be Mayo-quality care for everyone. This moves us beyond government-run health care versus free markets.

The bottom line: American health care is the most expensive, bureaucratic, seemingly unfixable program on Earth. But smart policymakers, working with experts at Mayo and beyond, could spare millions of Americans Autumn's health care hell. Shame on us if we don't.

I asked Dr. Farrugia to share his own lessons learned on AI and how he's implemented them at Mayo:

Organizations need to massively decentralize the responsibility and opportunities for finding uses for AI. The people closest to the work are best positioned to identify where AI can actually help because they know the workflow, the friction points and what patients or customers need. Governance, however, needs to be centralized to keep the organization out of trouble. That means the gate to full implementation comes much later in the process — but when it comes, it needs to be a very strong gate.

Avoid making definitive statements about future uses of AI and their implications. Those statements will be wrong in months, if not sooner.

Require each member of the C-suite to have built at least one agent on their own and to use more than one LLM at work several times a week. Only then will they be able to make the right decisions about AI for the institution.

The only way to pull or push people to a different place or worldview is to show them what better looks like. So I sketched this out, based on Autumn's experience and what Mayo is building with a multibillion-dollar bet on the hospital of 2030.

Imagine avoiding hospitals altogether, which would be the surest sign of a high-functioning medical system. How that could happen:

At a young age, Autumn's genetics, family history and current health are studied and stored in one safe, easy-to-read, easy-to-share place.

She's given recommendations on diet, supplements and general health maintenance, personalized based on her predispositions. Her potential issues are monitored and weighed against large data sets of similar people.

She decides how to act on this data. But everyone has equal visibility.

How it could/should work: Imagine the response once Autumn started getting sick. (Her earliest symptom was pericarditis, inflammation around her heart.)

Instead of going to a random doctor with scant understanding of her condition, she gets routed to someone with true expertise, who taps into a pool of data on other women with pericarditis.

She hops on a Zoom with this person — who could be anywhere worldwide with access to her health data. Her vitals are easily checked at home beforehand and fed into the data.

The doctor and Autumn decide together if an in-person examination is warranted. In many cases, a doctor on the screen and a nurse in her home could suffice.

Now, imagine Autumn is actively sick and needs to go to the hospital.

She never arrives a stranger. The workup happens before she travels. Her local doctor and the specialists see the same screen, with the plan set before she packs her bag. The one care leader is already clearly ID'd.

Her phone carries her medical history and directions to where she's headed. It provides photos of everyone she'll meet, along with their backgrounds.

She lands in what Mayo calls a neighborhood: imaging, labs, procedures, consults and recovery all co-located for complex patients, instead of a scavenger hunt across buildings and appointment desks. Her costs are clear and flagged.

The room itself feels healthy: controls for sound, lighting, temperature and TV. An electronic screen shows today's schedule and exactly what has to happen before she goes home. Family can easily Zoom in to chat and see her. Robots run supplies and meals, so nurses spend their hours on Autumn, not chores.

AI stays in the background: sequencing appointments across specialists, transcribing and summarizing conversations, catching conflicts in a brutal medication regimen. The machines absorb the paperwork. The humans focus on Autumn.

She goes home to connected devices tracking her vitals and her doses, alerts firing to her team when the numbers slide, virtual check-ins reading the trend line. The complication gets caught before she needs to return again.

The bottom line: None of this requires an invention. Every piece of it exists right now, somewhere. What's missing isn't technology. It's the will to rebuild care around the patient — the opposite of our existing mess.
