Incumbent Sarah Young is running unopposed in the race to represent Sugar House, one of Salt Lake City's most popular neighborhoods.
The big picture: While the area is celebrated for its charm and character, residents and business owners have increasingly felt the strain of growing development and incessant roadwork.
Catch up quick: Young was appointed by the Salt Lake City Council in 2023 and won her first election later that year after former Council Member Amy Fowler resigned in scandal.
How it works: Axios Salt Lake City sent all city council candidates a set of questions about the key issues facing the city ahead of the Nov. 4 election.
Their answers have been lightly edited for length and clarity.
1. What professional or community experience makes you believe you're the best candidate to represent your district?
As a city council member and longtime community advocate, I bring experience in city governance, over 20 years in education policy, and collaboration to deliver practical, people-centered solutions that make our neighborhoods safer, more connected, and more livable.
2. Housing affordability remains a top concern in Salt Lake City. What specific policies or tools would you support to keep lower housing and rent costs for residents?
I support expanding mixed-income housing, incentivizing affordable units near transit, creating incentives for housing for public safety workers and teachers, and preserving existing affordable homes through strategic investment and partnerships.
3. Tensions between the state and Salt Lake City have flared in past legislative sessions. What's your strategy for ensuring the city's interests are represented effectively on Capitol Hill?
Build collaborative, trust-based relationships with state leaders, focus on shared goals like housing and transportation, and communicate consistently to advocate for Salt Lake City's priorities and residents.
4. What's one hidden gem in your district that you love and want to tell everyone about?
Sugar House Coffee
5. Describe your leadership style in one word.
