Creating a list of the Triangle's 30 best restaurants keeps getting harder for us here at Axios Raleigh.
- We see it as a sign of just how vibrant the region's cuisine has gotten over the past decade, with longtime institutions going strong and an ever-growing list of exciting newcomers.
Why it matters: The Triangle's food scene — which is gaining more national attention — is one of the region's best assets and provides pockets of distinct personality, from downtown Raleigh and North Hills to Durham, Chapel Hill and beyond.
Driving the news: We dined across the Triangle, consulted industry leaders, and got feedback from hundreds of readers to bring you a guide that, we hope, captures this moment in time.
How it works: In addition to considering quality of food, we factored in service, vibe, beverage offerings and how long an establishment has been open.
- We pay our own way and do our best to eat at restaurants across the region undetected so we're as neutral as possible in our assessments.
- You may notice that some restaurants have fallen or risen in the rankings since last year. Those changes mainly stem from the readers' shifting demographics and tastes. Plus, we've added some newer restaurants to this list.
No. 1: Stanbury
For the third time in four years, Stanbury has topped our list of the best restaurants. And it's not hard to see why our readers sing its praises every time they can.
- The perfect night at Stanbury is a combination of competing forces. It's unpretentious while serving some of the most elevated food in the region; it's lively, yet intimate enough to feel like you've stumbled upon a dinner party where no invitation is needed.
- But the creativity of the kitchen — and a menu that relies on but is not hamstrung by the seasons — is what keeps eaters coming back, waiting to be surprised by that week's invention.
Location: 938 N. Blount St., Raleigh.
No. 2: Ajja
To walk into Ajja is to be transported. It's laidback and colorful inside and out, with a menu influenced by the Mediterranean and Near East.
- Chef Cheetie Kumar opened the spot three years ago, and the kitchen continues to deliver meals that are inventive and fresh. It's known for whole-fried trout as well as a rotating roster of seasonal dishes, like this summer's blissful watermelon carpaccio.
- Ajja means "come over" in Urdu, and the staff embody that friendliness.
Location: 209 Bickett Blvd., Raleigh.
No. 3: M Sushi
Michael Lee debuted on the Durham dining scene with M Sushi in 2016. A decade later, it's still one of the best fine-dining spots in the state.
- M Sushi flies in some of the best cuts of fish from Japan and Korea, and its always-changing omakase experiences are unforgettable.
- Sit at the bar and get a front-row seat of the chefs at work.

No. 4: Nanas
Every time someone tells us they just went to Nanas, we turn a little green with envy. Not just because the food is that good, but because it likely means we missed out on a celebration.
- Nanas has cemented itself as the definitive spot for Durhamites looking to toast a new promotion, treat themselves for their birthday, or celebrate an anniversary.
- Chef Matt Kelly's menu — featuring standouts like duck ragout tagliatelle, the twice-baked grits souffle, and a North Carolina shrimp risotto — is a treat worth savoring.
Location: 2514 University Drive, Durham.
No. 5: Brodeto
No one is doing seafood in the Triangle quite the way chef Scott Crawford is doing it at Brodeto.
- The restaurant, inspired by Crawford's travels around Italy and Croatia, offers dishes you won't find elsewhere, including a Croatian seafood stew and a linguine featuring sea urchin butter. There's a brightness and brininess to the dishes that makes you feel like you're sitting next to a wood-fired grill on the edge of the Adriatic.
- You don't have to take our word for it. Brodeto is where most of the Hurricanes decided to celebrate their Stanley Cup win once they got back to Raleigh. If it's good enough for Lord Stanley's trophy, it's probably more than good enough for you.

No. 6: Hawthorne & Wood
Ever since he moved back home after helming the Michelin-starred Solbar in California, chef Brandon Sharp has been taking over the Chapel Hill food scene — now running three separate and great restaurants in the college town.
- But it's the flagship, Hawthorne & Wood, that built it all. The restaurant, as Sharp puts it, is the culmination of a career spent working in some of the best restaurants and traveling the world.
- That can be seen in a menu that doesn't really stick to one cuisine or tradition. You're just as likely to find a General Tso's cauliflower and gourmet cheeseburger next to an expertly seared scallop or slow-roasted lamb.
Location: 3140 Environ Way, Chapel Hill.
No. 7: Bombolo
Every dinner at Bombolo is an adventure, with an eclectic menu drawing inspiration from all over the world, from Italy to Thailand to Louisiana.
- Chef Garret Fleming and pastry chef Eleanor Lacy are the brother-and-sister duo behind the eatery, which was named North Carolina Restaurant of the Year by Eater in 2023.
Location: 764 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Chapel Hill.
No. 8: Ideal's
Like you, we were skeptical that anything could be worth waiting in a long line for on a muggy, 90-degree day in Durham. This isn't New York, after all.
- But, man, do these sandwiches deliver, whether you're going for their signature Philly-style roast pork, their chopped cheese, or one of their excellent eggplant and rabe veggie subs.
- Thankfully, the line isn't as long these days after Ideal's expanded its hours and its bakery.
Location: 2108 Angier Ave., Durham.
No. 9: Little Bull
Chef Oscar Diaz, one of the region's many James Beard-nominated chefs, is behind the creative and compelling menu at Little Bull.
- It melds the flavors and ingredients of his Mexican-American youth with global influences for a wide variety of tapas for sharing among the whole table.
- Little Bull relocated this summer to a larger and more central location downtown.
Location: 301 E. Chapel Hill St., Durham.
No. 10: Herons
Herons is perhaps the most ambitious restaurant in the state, and chef Steven Devereaux Greene's staff's expert touch is evident on every single plate.
- Staff pull fresh produce and herbs from Herons' own farm, and seafood deliveries arrive daily from the Carolina coast.
- It is Michelin-recommended, and the attention to detail extends beyond ingredients and preparation to exquisite service, too. It's a special-occasion spot like no other.
Location: 100 Woodland Pond Drive, Cary (inside the Umstead Hotel).
No. 11: Brewery Bhavana
The menu at Brewery Bhavana is filled with dim sum favorites and other Chinese-inspired dishes.
- It's known for the comfort-food rice congee, as well as its elegant but calming atmosphere.
- It's so popular with the downtown Raleigh crowd that last year, the owners opened a second location in Cary.
Location: 218 S. Blount St., Raleigh, or 850 Lower Garden Lane, Cary.
No. 12: Vin Rouge
Before opening a fiefdom of successful restaurants in Durham — including Mateo, Mothers & Sons, and Nanas — Matt Kelly came to the Bull City as a chef at Vin Rouge under restaurateur Giorgios Bakatsias.
- There he made the restaurant his own, turning it into such a fixture with his take on French cuisine that he eventually became its co-owner.
- If you're ever craving oysters or steak frites, this is the place.
Location: 2010 Hillsborough Road, Durham.
No. 13: Mala Pata
Only a year old, Mala Pata is the newest restaurant on the list.
- The space is colorful and mural-filled, with a delightful Oaxacan menu and well-made cocktails.
- Pro tip: Start with the buñuelos, buttery fried balls of gooey cheese that melt in your mouth. They are unforgettable.
Location: 2431 Crabtree Blvd., suite 102, Raleigh.
No. 14: Peregrine
Peregrine debuted a month before Mala Pata, and it quickly established itself as one of the best places in Raleigh for a good meal.
- Chef Saif Rahman is behind the creative and multicultural menu, which draws inspiration from his Bangladeshi heritage as well as his days cooking in New York City.
- The cocktail menu is equally exploratory, and the contemporary interior provides a calming setting.
Location: 1000 Social St., Suite 150, Raleigh.
No. 15: Crawford & Son
Scott Crawford may be as well known for being a successful businessman these days as he is for being a chef, after building a $20 million hospitality empire.
- But food is an art form, too, and Crawford & Son is the chef's most expansive canvas. The Southern-inspired fine-dining restaurant has been a standout of Raleigh's dining scene ever since it opened in 2016.
- And with a menu that is ever shifting, you can trust you're in good hands to be guided by staff, whether it is ordering an heirloom tomato salad or a hefty pork collar. The one delicious constant on the menu: the manchego-herb biscuits.
Location: 618 N. Person St., Raleigh.
No. 16: Mediterranean Deli
Med Deli is an iconic spot near UNC-Chapel Hill's campus that's been family-run for 35 years.
- The food is fresh and flavorful, influenced by Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisines.
- With so many choices, it's often best to go with a sampler platter. And don't skip dessert — especially the cheese baklava.
Location: 410 W. Franklin St., Chapel Hill, and on-campus at N.C. State, Carolina and Elon.
No. 17: Tesoro
Possessing one of the Triangle's most intimate dining rooms, perhaps no one is more devoted to the possibilities of pasta than Tesoro.
- The 26-seat Carrboro restaurant, opened in 2021, gained attention for its housemade pastas, which rotate in and out, but the menu doesn't stop there.
- Its focaccia bread with whipped butter and arancini rice balls are among the best we've had.
Location: 100 E. Weaver St., Carrboro.
No. 18: St. Roch
Let us know if we're wrong, but we don't think any other restaurant is coming up with Creole inventions such as gator bolognese like St. Roch is in downtown Raleigh.
- Helmed by Sunny Gerhart — a mustachioed chef and New Orleans native — St. Roch lovingly and playfully dances around the culinary traditions of his hometown while possessing one of the best raw bars in the South.
Location: 223 S. Wilmington St., Raleigh.
No. 19: Standard
At this point, it really does live up to the name. This is the standard place you will find Raleighites gathering in groups to socialize.
- The Standard has made its mark here not just by making some of the best beer in the area, but also by crafting addictingly good food, including truffle tots, smashburgers, skirt-steak tacos and chopped salads.
- A new location in North Hills has added a wrinkle to its offerings, introducing new items like piri piri chicken and swordfish schnitzel.
Location: 205 E. Franklin St., Raleigh, or 460 St. Albans Drive, Raleigh.
No. 20: Rose's Noodles, Dumplings and Sweets
Rose's is one of those places that is so consistently delicious that it's easy to accept the limited hours and seating.
- The menu is East Asian-inspired, and chefs procure seasonal, local ingredients that keep things fresh and exciting. Noodles are handmade and there's always an abundance of dessert options.
- Sit at the bar to watch your meal being prepared.
Location: 121 N. Gregson St., Durham.
No. 21: Mateo Bar de Tapas
Mateo remains a favorite of the downtown Durham scene 14 years after it opened.
- It was acclaimed chef Matt Kelly's first solo venture and features an ever-evolving menu of Spanish tapas.
- Pro tip: The more people you can gather around the table, the more you can order. Mateo was built for long nights.
Location: 109 W. Chapel Hill St., Durham.
No. 22: Pizzeria Toro
Everything in Pizzeria Toro revolves around the large wood-fired stove at the heart of the downtown restaurant.
- Toro's pies, salads and Italian desserts can be ordered daily from 11am to 11pm, some of the best hours in downtown Durham.
- And it's expanding to Raleigh soon.
Location: 105 E. Chapel Hill St., Durham.
No. 23: Seraphine
A love letter to Louisiana from Brad and Graham Weddington (the brothers behind Nanasteak), Seraphine earned a Michelin recommendation last year.
- The restaurant takes on the classics of New Orleans eating, from oysters and crawfish to gumbo and beignets.
- Pro tip: Get the rabbit cavatelli. And sit outside in the charming patio whenever possible.
Location: 324 Blackwell St., Suite 4, Durham.
No. 24: Pizzeria Mercato
For 10 years now, Pizzeria Mercato and chef Gabe Barker have been serving up some of the best pizza anywhere in the state, combining Neapolitan-style classics with delightful creations based on whatever was available at local farmers markets.
- Take the grilled corn pizza, a combination of ingredients that shouldn't make sense but absolutely does. You'll be kicking yourself if you don't try a slice before the dish exits the menu at the end of the summer.
Location: 408 W. Weaver St., Carrboro.
No. 25: M Tempura
M Tempura was Michael Lee's third restaurant in Durham, and the exquisite preparation and small dining room make for a truly special dining experience.
- Expertly fried fish and vegetables are best ordered omakase style with a bottle of bubbly.
- M Tempura chef de cuisine Savannah Miller was a finalist on "Top Chef."
Location: 111 W. Orange St., Durham.
No. 26: Cucciolo
Italian food done right never disappoints — and Cucciolo does it just right every time.
- Twin restaurants in Durham and Raleigh execute to perfection on dishes like Sostanza-style butter chicken and spicy vodka tomato cream rigatoni.
Location: 601 W. Main St., Suite C, Durham, or 4200 Six Forks Road, Suite 100, Raleigh.
No. 27: Nikos
Nikos is one of the best by prolific local restaurateur Giorgios Bakatsias.
- The menu, filled with Greek classics, earned a nod from the Michelin Guide last year.
- Sit on the outdoor patio surrounded by the red brick of Brightleaf Square, or head inside for a lively art-filled atmosphere.
Location: 905 W. Main St., Unit 21B, Durham.
No. 28: Tamasha
Tamasha has one of the glitziest dining rooms in North Hills — a space that feels like stepping into an art piece.
- It provides a worthy backdrop for the creative menu designed by chef Bhavin Chhatwani, who delicately refreshes and remixes many regional Indian classics, like an oyster 65 or a whole branzino done by way of the Malabar coast.
Location: 4200 Six Forks Road, Suite 130, Raleigh.
No. 29: Bluebird
Bluebird, chef Brandon Sharp's devoted take on French cuisine, opened with much anticipation in Chapel Hill in 2022 after he impressed diners with Hawthorne & Wood.
- Bluebird has remained a favorite ever since, cementing itself as one of the best date-night spots in town due to its cozy, cafe-style decor.
- The menu is full of French classics, such as duck liver pate, French onion soup, duck confit and croque madame.
Location: 601 Meadowmont Village Circle, Chapel Hill.
No. 30: Poole's
You could argue that much of Raleigh's ascendant food reputation from the past two decades was built off of chef Ashley Christensen's work with the modern, Southern diner Poole's.
- When it opened in 2007, it kickstarted a renaissance of dining in downtown Raleigh, a movement that ultimately made her the first North Carolina chef to win the James Beard Awards' Outstanding Chef honor.
- Today, Poole's is still going strong, operating out of a recently renovated space and still serving classics like its iconic macaroni au gratin.
Location: 428 S. McDowell St., Raleigh.
