Hayward reopens in Carlton with new dining experience

Celebrated chef Kari Shaughnessy will reopen her James Beard-nominated restaurant Hayward in its new Carlton home this week, shortly after moving out of McMinneville's Mac Market in May.
State of play: Hayward, which opened in 2023, is a big reason the Willamette Valley's culinary scene has been on the come up.
- Shaughnessy's continually evolving menu (often built around a theme, like "The Sopranos" or childhood nostalgia) and commitment to using the region's hyper-seasonal produce has earned her national attention.
Yes, but: The restaurant quickly outgrew the communal food hall, and Shaughnessy soon "felt like it was time for Hayward to graduate from the 'incubator' space and be in its standalone location," she told Portland Monthly.
The latest: The new 70-seat space in Carlton, 15 minutes down the road from its former location, will have six rooms that guests will flow into and out of during their dining experience — all meant to reflect an intimate house party.
- For example, diners will relax on the porch with welcome beverages, get cozy in the living room's two-top banquettes or dine al fresco in the garden's covered patio.
- It was designed by Danridge Geiger, who spearheaded many of Earl Ninsom's restaurants (Eem, Langbaan, Paadee) and features elements highlighting Hayward's dedication to sustainability, like the curtains, which were dyed using vegetable scraps from the kitchen.
If you go: Hayward (209 N. Kutch St., Carlton) is open Wednesday through Saturday, 5-9pm. Reservations are live online, but walk-ins are welcome.
