Vancouver is on an upswing, but the city's food scene has been a highlight for some time.
So next time you find a two-plus hour wait at Screen Door or Eem, head across the Columbia to these spots instead.
Little Conejo
114 W 6th Street
Details: There are over 100 mezcals to choose from at this joint known for piling the cotija high on each plate of tacos and tortas.
Best bite: The tacos dorados, which features fried tortillas filled with potatoes and cheese then topped with shredded cabbage, onion, cilantro and housemade hot sauce.
La Sorrentina
3000 Southeast 164th Avenue
Details: Owner and chef Daisuke Matsumoto used to sling his Neapolitan pizza slices out of a food truck in Hazel Dell, now it's a miracle if you can get a table (or phone in an order) before they're sold out.
Best bite: Calzone apologists (looking at you Ben Wyatt) will love the namesake pizza stuffed with ricotta, ham and pepperoni, topped with tomato sauce.
Pho Vi Van
16209 SE Mcgillivray Boulevard
Details: Located in a strip mall across from the Fisher's Landing New Seasons, this Vietnamese eatery never skimps on noodles, toppings or finely sliced meats in its various pho offerings.
Best bite: The lemongrass grilled chicken vermicelli comes with a fried egg roll of your choice and crunchy veggies — it's the perfect light, fragrant and flavorful lunch.
Bleu Door Bakery
2411 Main Street
Details: This French-inspired cafe has everything: Quiche du jour, Monte Cristo sandwiches, sourdough pancakes and rotating pastries like danishes, croissants, cookies and scones.
Best bite: The beignets, duh.
Los Alambres Kitchen
6331 E Mill Plain Boulevard
Details: Another shopping mall delight (and former Rose City establishment), this Mexico City-inspired restaurant is known for its 22-inch- cheese-and-meat-filled machetes and street-style taco plates — though we're big fans of the burritos.
Best bite: Don't skimp on the desserts! The heavily dusted cinnamon sugar churros are as long as an arm.
Kenji's Ramen and Grill
204 SE Park Plaza Drive #103
Details: Ramen with kimchi? Sign us up! This Japanese-Korean spot boasts a robust menu of fried chicken wings, gyoza and nearly a dozen variations of ramen.
Best bite: Order "the OG" — chicken and pork broth with sesame chili oil, marinated egg and fatty pork belly.
