Legendary Billy Goat Tavern owner Sam Sianis, 91, died Friday morning surrounded by his family, the restaurant announced on social media.
Backstory: Sianis came to Chicago from Greece in the 1960s to work for his uncle William Sianis (who famously tried to bring a goat into Wrigley Field) Sam continued to run the business after his uncle's death in 1970.
Star turn: Sianis was immortalized on SNL in by John Belushi as a Greek short-order cook who yells "cheezborger" with every new order.
- The tavern owner hosted celebrities, presidents, journalists and sports stars at his humble basement bar and grill, but never seemed phased.
What they're saying: "Sam was more than a restaurateur; he was a Chicago legend. His tireless work ethic, devotion to his beloved Tavern, and deep love for this city made him a cultural icon and an inspiration to all who knew him," Billy Goat staff said on the tavern's Instagram page.
- "Above all, he was a devoted family man and a cherished friend to countless people whose lives he touched."
What's next: Sianis is survived by his wife Irene, his children and grandchildren. Services are being planned.
