I've been blessed to have a Billy Goat Tavern right downstairs from my newsrooms at the Sun-Times, Tribune and WBEZ, but not at my Axios home office.
That changed this month when a Billy Goat opened in Wrigleyville a few blocks from my home.
The vibe: With a huge, wooden horseshoe bar, tin ceilings, and old Mike Royko columns and vintage photos framed on the walls, the place feels like it's been there for years.
Dig in: Unlike the Lower Michigan Avenue location, no one verbally pressures you to buy the double cheese, but you have to order from the kids' menu if you want just a single.
Unlike the original Goat of decades ago, here Coke flows freely from the soda fountain and crisp, golden fries emerge from the kitchen.
Yes, but: You can also buy chips.
What's next: Right now, the place opens at 8am with egg sandwiches for breakfast, but staffer Aurora Duran tells Axios they'll expand to a full breakfast menu soon.
If you go: 3724 N. Clark St. Open every day from 8am to midnight.
