Chicago-based musician Andrew Bird released a new song today for HBO's award-winning series "The Pitt."
The latest: Grammy-nominated Bird collaborated with "The Pitt" composer Gavin Brivik on the song "Need Someone," which can be heard at a pivotal moment in episode six of season 2.
What they're saying: "I really enjoy these projects because the challenge is to respond to the emotion of the scene with melody and lyrics," Bird said in a press release.
- "I was thinking of all the hardships the characters have endured, and how if you are an empathetic, good person, you can hope that people will be there for you when it's your time to pass on. I suppose it's really about karma."
State of play: Brivik says after watching the episode with the showrunner, he started to think about Bird for the music. "I felt so lucky that he was interested in working with us," Brivik said.
- "I sent Andrew a sketch of the song and within hours, he sent me back a voice memo of his first pass, which literally brought me and the music editor, Lorena, to tears."
Zoom out: Bird, who now lives in Los Angeles, cut his teeth writing and performing in Chicago clubs like The Hideout and the Green Mill. He's graduated to bigger venues like Chicago Theatre and his annual holiday residency at Fourth Presbyterian Church on Michigan Avenue.
- Bird has done film soundtrack work before, collaborating on films and series produced for FX, PBS and Disney.
- He has also extended his work into other television, landing an acting role on the hit FX series "Fargo."
What's next: Bird is celebrating the 20th anniversary of his popular album, "The Mysterious Production of Eggs," by touring in select cities.
- You can hear Bird's new song on "The Pitt," airing at 9pm EST Thursday on HBO.
