670 The Score is moving to FM radio in Chicago

Why it matters: The station broadcasts play-by-play coverage of the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bulls, which means listeners will get those games in FM quality.

What they're saying: "It's a major moment in Chicago sports history," The Score's vice president Mitch Rosen tells Axios.

• "AM listenership across the country and in Chicago has significantly dropped year after year, so to add an FM frequency is just incredible and could potentially bring in a larger and younger demographic."

Yes, but: Old school hip-hop fans are out of luck as 104.3 Jams will cease to exist. Its last day will be Feb. 1.

• The station has been broadcasting this hip-hop format since 2017.

Flashback: FM sports talk has never taken hold in Chicago. There have been some experiments, including the short-lived "The Game" on 88.7, which ended in 2014.

• Bears games used to be simulcast on 105.9FM via WBBM-AM, too.

Reality check: While those are small examples, nothing has ever come close to this move to put sports talk on a major FM station in Chicago.

• "This takes us to the next level," Rosen adds. "I'm just over the moon."

By the numbers: WSCR-AM finished the December ratings period in 13th place overall, while WBMX-FM finished 18th.

The bottom line: Chicago sports coverage on the radio is about to get a whole lot clearer.
