Even if you hate the stinky cheese, being shoulder to shoulder or you're just a Scrooge, at some point as a Chicagoan, you will probably experience the Christkindlmarket.
We're here to guide you through it.
The big picture: The market selling ornaments, holiday decor, trinkets, German food and hot wine takes place every day at Daley Plaza from late November through Dec. 24.
- It opens daily at 11am and closes at 8pm on weekdays and 9pm on weekends.
Friction point: Mayor Brandon Johnson responded to complaints about massive lines by implementing a 1,553-person capacity last month — about 2,000 fewer people than usual.
- But after vendors complained the new rule was hurting business, the mayor's office quickly relented, increasing capacity to about 2,500.

Zoom in: Between the Axios Chicago writers, we have about 100 years (roughly) of market experience, so we're giving you the insider tips that you won't get from all those other guides.
💵 They'll say: Bring cash.
We say: Who carries cash these days?! This was actually sound advice when very few vendors took cards, and you do need cash for beer and wine, but plenty of the vendors now take credit cards.
🎅🏼 They'll say: You have to experience the original market at Daley Plaza.
We say: Who needs to go to the Loop? The Wrigleyville or Aurora markets give you an authentic experience.
🧀 They'll say: Get the Raclette sandwich!
We say: You can if you want. But lines are long, and sometimes that stink is just too much. Plenty of kiosks sling authentic German fare. Our picks this year: double bratwurst, rollmops and seitan kebab wrap.
😩 They'll say: The lines are too long; you'll never get in.
We say: Come on, this isn't your first rodeo. Lines are part of city living. It's on you if you go at noon on a Saturday. Consider 10am on a weekday or pop over during your lunch break with co-workers. Sweetgreen won't miss ya.
- Pro tip: Try side entrances on Clark or Dearborn for easier access.
🧣 They'll say: Layer up! The heated tents get crowded, so be prepared to stand outside in the cold.
We say: We agree with this one. Don't be an amateur — double up your socks and grab your puffiest coat.
The bottom line: Christkindlmarket is a Chicago holiday tradition that everyone should try at least once, if only for the commemorative mug.
