From factory to hotspot: The story behind Trivoli Tavern's iconic West Loop alley

This week's History Mystery is more recent than some of the archival photos we've investigated.
The big picture: In early 2012, the alley off Green Street, halfway between Washington and Randolph Streets, was just…an alley.
- A few years later, the Hogsalt restaurant group opened a new restaurant in the old Graphic Arts Finishing factory at the back of the alley. They called it "Trivoli Tavern."
Why it matters: The photo shows how much the West Loop and Fulton Market have changed in less than a decade.
Context: The restaurant group quickly refurbished the alley and built an outdoor space for Trivoli and its adjoining restaurants, creating a gorgeous, cobblestone, social media-friendly alcove that attracts thousands of tourists.
The bottom line: 13 years later, Trivoli is still one of the anchors of the hot "restaurant row" along Randolph Street.
