This week's "History Mystery" looks at a 1954 snapshot of an area that continues to buzz as the epicenter of nightlife in Chicago.
The spot: 1045 N. Rush St. in the heart of the Gold Coast neighborhood.
Zoom in: At first glance, it's hard to pick up any clues from addresses or numbers that might help reveal the neighborhood.
Yes, but: As many readers pointed out, the clue is the sign for Adolph's restaurant. This was a popular spot on Rush Street until it closed in the early 1980s. Just up the street was Agostino's Restaurant, reported to be one of the first Italian restaurants on Rush Street.
- Adolph's sat across the street from Mister Kelly's (now Gibson's) and was even rumored to be frequented by members of the Chicago outfit.
- Carmine's Restaurant replaced Adolph's at 1043 N. Rush St., a spot that has been temporarily closed for multiple years as it undergoes extensive renovations.
