From The Violet Hour to Gale Street Inn: Here's what's closing this summer

Here are some notable closures:

🍹 The end of the cocktail (Violet) hour: One of the country's best cocktail bars has closed its tab. One Off Hospitality (Big Star, Publican, Avec) opened The Violet Hour in 2007 and ushered in a wave of cocktail-forward spots outside of downtown. The Wicker Park staple closed temporarily earlier this month with a plumbing issue, but the James Beard-winning bar made it permanent last week.

📰 Extra, extra, read all about it: The famed Kaage Family Newsstand in Edison Park locked up for the last time on Sunday. Owner Mike Kaage is retiring after working the stand for several decades. The 6-by-6-foot newsstand has been at the corner of Oliphant and North Northwest Highway in Edison Park for 82 years.

🍖 Tired of sucking: Jefferson Park's Gale Street Inn abruptly closed its doors in June, citing labor shortages and rising costs. The family-run restaurant was a Northwest Side attraction open for more than 60 years.

🥛 From the land of Milk & Honey: Wicker Park bakery and sandwich spot Milk & Honey was once the top spot on Division Street for the neighborhood's hip, young demographic. It was sold to new owners in 2022, and in May, the city shut down the restaurant for not having the proper business license. It has been temporarily closed since, with no signs of reopening.

🚚 Migrating north: After 30 years in Lincoln Park, Pizza Capri quietly closed its doors and relocated to North Elston Avenue in Avondale. The pizza place was a staple at the corner of Armitage and Halsted, anchoring the end of the neighborhood's charming shopping corridor.

Other notable endings: Tai Wah Grocery (Chinatown), Fire (Fulton Market), Angry Crab (Wicker Park), Mable's Table (Bucktown), Jook Sing (West Town), Liberation Kitchen (West Town), Strings (moving to Logan Square), Colores Mexicanos (Michigan Avenue), Birrieria Zaragoza (Archer Heights location, closed from fire), Belle Up Boutique (Beverly) and Tea Pot Bakery (South Loop).
