Polls are open 6am–7pm Tuesday in Illinois, a state that Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to win but down-ballot races could offer more surprises.
Why it matters: Illinois is consistently blue, so Harris is expected to sweep the state, especially in Cook County, which often dominates overall numbers.
- But Chicago's first school board election is being closely watched, as the race has become a proxy fight between the Chicago Teachers Union and charter school-backed groups.
The big picture: The Harris campaign hasn't spent a lot of time in Illinois, mainly relying on surrogate Gov. JB Pritzker to drum up support among Democrats, including a $5 million donation to the Vice President's campaign, the New York Times reported.
- Sitting congressional Democrats will most likely retain their seats, but 17th District Rep. Eric Sorensen in Rockford could be vulnerable against Joe McGraw, as Republicans have gone after the first-term congressman.
Zoom in: Democrat Eileen O'Neill Burke is expected to win the Cook County State's Attorney race against Republican Bob Fioretti, even though he has been fervently collecting endorsements.
