Your guide to the Cook County State's Attorney race

• After a very close Democratic primary, Judge Eileen O'Neill Burke eked out a narrow win over former prosecutor Clayton Harris III, even though the County Democratic Party endorsed Harris.
• Republican candidate Bob Fioretti ran unopposed in the primary.

The Democrat: O'Neill Burke was characterized as less progressive than Harris during the primary even though their platforms were very similar and not much different from their predecessor.

First priority if elected: "Tackling illegal guns and assault weapons," O'Neill Burke tells Axios.

The Republican: A former Democratic alderperson, Fioretti switched to the Republican Party in 2022 and says he wants to reform some provisions of the state's bail reform law.

First priority if elected: "Reversing the Democratic Party and the current state's attorney's mindset that the criminals are the good guys, the police are the bad guys and the victims don't matter," Fioretti tells Axios. "I will reverse that on day one."

TV talk: We asked both candidates if they've watched the "Presumed Innocent" Apple TV series (set squarely in the Cook County State's Attorney's office) and neither had.

• O'Neill Burke says she's read the Scott Turow book upon which it's based, and Fioretti says he's going to "binge" it now.

Of note: Libertarian candidate Andrew Kopinski is also running.
