Axios Phoenix

February 08, 2024
Happy Thursday! The weekend is so close we can taste it.
☔ Today's weather: High of 58 with a high chance of rain.
Today's newsletter is 882 words — a 3.3-minute read.
1 big thing: ☔️ The stormiest show on grass
The WM Phoenix Open tournament begins today and organizers promise the forecast rain and chilly temperatures won't dampen the drunkest — oops, we mean "Greatest — Show on Grass."
Why it matters: The Phoenix Open is the best-attended golf tournament in the world — typically bringing in 700,000 fans and revelers each year, according to its host, TPC Scottsdale.
- An economic impact study published last year by Arizona State University found the tournament generates more than $450 million for the state's economy.
Driving the news: Yesterday's fan-favorite tournament between pros and amateurs was canceled around 1pm because of heavy rain.
What we're watching: The Scottsdale area will likely see the most rain today, with 0.1-0.25 inches estimated between mid-morning and late afternoon, National Weather Service Phoenix lead meteorologist Alex Young tells Axios Phoenix.
- Rain chances drop off tomorrow to 10% to 20% but pick up again Saturday with a 30% to 40% chance. If storms do hit, rainfall totals likely won't exceed 0.1 inches either day, he says.
- "Worse case scenario, you get dumped on for 20 minutes and then it's over," Young says, cautioning that attendees should make their way inside if they see lightning.
Of note: A prolonged blast on an air horn will indicate play has been suspended and attendees should seek shelter.
- Two short blasts will indicate play has resumed, per the WM Phoenix Open's weather policy.
Be smart: WM Phoenix Open's social media pages will have rain-related guidance. Organizers say only umbrellas without sleeves are permitted.
- Fans who attended yesterday's tournament were prohibited from parking in grass lots because of the damp conditions and instead were encouraged to park at WestWorld and use free shuttles.
The intrigue: There's a new 13,000-square-foot indoor facility to take shelter in case of rain — DraftKings Sportsbook at TPC Scottsdale.
- It opened in October as the nation's first sportsbook at a PGA Tour tournament location.
2. Border deal crumbles
Congressional GOP leadership quashed any hope of a bipartisan border security solution this week and both parties are looking to shuffle the blame, Jessica reports with Axios' Hans Nichols and Stef Kight.
Why it matters: A massive influx of immigrants at the southern border has caused a multitude of issues in Arizona border communities — most notably the monthlong closure of the Lukeville Port of Entry.
- Border security is expected to be a key issue among Arizona voters in both the presidential election and U.S. Senate race.
Driving the news: Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell officially pulled the plug on the border deal he helped negotiate Tuesday, acknowledging that pro-Trump Republicans would never allow it to become law in an election year.
- House Republican leadership had already indicated it would be dead on arrival.
- Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-Ariz.), one of the key negotiators, bashed Republicans for reneging on the deal.
The big picture: Former President Trump hasn't made any effort to hide his calculus that the legislation, which also included funding for Ukraine and Israel, would have hurt Republicans at the ballot box.
- "This is a gift to the Democrats. And this sort of is a shifting of the worst border in history onto the shoulders of Republicans," Trump said Monday on the "The Dan Bongino Show."
- He and his supporters, including U.S. Senate candidate Kari Lake, have chastised the deal, saying it wouldn't do enough to stop illegal border crossings.
The other side: "This bill won't even move forward to the Senate floor. Why? A simple reason: Donald Trump," President Biden said Tuesday.
3. 🔥 Fieri can't quit Phoenix's food scene
He's baaaaack! Guy Fieri's new season of "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives" will once again trek through some of the Valley's unique culinary institutions.
State of play: Tune into the Food Network to catch the Mayor of Flavortown's visits to:
- The Fry Bread House, where he'll sample posole and, of course, fry bread. The episode airs Feb. 16.
- Scottsdale's Hush Public House, where Italian beef and duck fried rice are on the menu. The episode airs Feb. 23.
The big picture: Fieri is no stranger to Arizona. He's featured at least three dozen of our restaurants on his show, according to Flavortown USA, a website run by Fieri superfans.
- And, he opened his first full-service restaurant in downtown Phoenix in 2022. (Don't miss the Trash Can Nachos.)
