Why it matters:Every birth matters for the region's endangered southern resident killer whales.
The Center for Whale Research confirmed the birth of K47 after a tiny calf was spotted swimming with the K pod last week.
It is believed to be less than two weeks old.
Scientists don't yet know who the mother is or the calf's sex.
The calf appears to be swimming normally, but southern resident calves face steep odds, with only about half surviving their first year, per the center.
