Bruce Harrell concedes Seattle mayor's race

• The city hasn't re-elected a mayor since 2005.

Zoom in: In a speech at City Hall, Harrell thanked members of his administration, many of them by name.

• He said he hopes Wilson's team will continue some of his administration's work on city-funded education programs, as well as on public safety and economic development initiatives.
• "There has to be economic development, there has to be jobs for everybody," Harrell said. "We cannot lose jobs here in Seattle."
• He said he believes he and Wilson share the same values, but have different ideas about how to get there.

Context: Wilson, who co-founded the nonprofit Transit Riders Union, has spent the past 14 years in an outside advocacy role, pushing for policies such as progressive taxes, higher minimum wages and stronger renter protections.

• She campaigned on a message of making Seattle more affordable, while arguing Harrell hasn't done enough to address homelessness and the city's high cost of living.

• While Wilson has told media outlets she identifies as a socialist or Democratic socialist, it wasn't a label she emphasized during the campaign.

Harrell was elected mayor in 2021 after serving three terms on the city council.

• He told reporters Thursday that he doesn't know what's his next step is after he leaves City Hall.
• But, he said, "I'm not retired. I'm not going anywhere."
