The revamped Pier 58 on the Seattle waterfront opened late last month, adding more space to hang out along Elliott Bay — and I finally got to check it out this week.
The latest: The updated plaza features a modern fountain, lots of public seating, an area for lawn games, and a playground with a jellyfish-shaped climbing structure that's hard to miss.
Zoom in: I visited on Thursday with my two kids and was pleasantly surprised: there was plenty of space for my youngest to run around without weaving through crowds, which meant I actually got to sit on a bench and relax for a minute — a small miracle when I've got both kids in tow.
- I'd also been slightly worried my older child would find a way to leap off the 25-foot-tall jellyfish into the bay. Thankfully, that didn't happen.
- The structure is designed so you can only climb up through the middle, making spontaneous dives pretty much impossible.

- While the playground is mostly surrounded by water — part of an effort to let light reach the shoreline and support fish habitat — it still feels safe for kids to explore.
The new public bathroom nearby also comes in handy.
The bottom line: We'll definitely be back.
