Seattle's Pier 58 to reopen with major new park space

The renovated Pier 58 on Seattle's waterfront opens Friday, adding 50,000 square feet of new public park space along Elliott Bay.

Why it matters: The pier is one of the final pieces of Seattle's yearslong waterfront revamp, which kicked into high gear after the Alaskan Way Viaduct came down in 2019.

What's happening: The city is holding an opening celebration for the revamped pier — which is located between Union and Pike streets, next to the Seattle Aquarium — from 4-8pm Friday.

Zoom in: The playground is noteworthy for having a jellyfish climbing sculpture that's 25 feet tall, along with other marine-themed elements.

The pier also includes openings that allow sunlight to reach the water near the shore — part of an effort to help improve salmon habitat.

What we're watching: A grand celebration for the entire 20-acre Waterfront Park project is still anticipated later this summer.
