Walmart plans drone delivery for Salt Lake

Zoom in: When it arrives in Salt Lake, some residents will be able to order groceries and other merchandise from local stores and have it dropped off in about 30 minutes.

How it works: If you're in the service range, you'll be able to select the drone delivery option on Walmart's app or place an order on Wing's app.

• They'll confirm the delivery spot, like a backyard or driveway.
• Employees load the drone, which then flies to the destination and lowers to the ground for the customer to pick up.

The fine print: It's usually available for orders of 2.1 pounds or less, that are 6-8 miles from a participating store.

What we're watching: Walmart hasn't said when drone delivery will launch here, or what locations will offer it.

Catch up quick: Walmart launched drone delivery in Herriman and Lindon in 2022, but grounded the service in 2024.

• Its partner at the time, DroneUp, said the model wasn't yet scalable.

Zoom out: Walmart's drone delivery is now available in Atlanta; Charlotte, North Carolina; Dallas-Fort Worth; and Houston.
