Utah lawmaker seeks to ban ICE from wearing masks

What they're saying: "Today more than ever, we understand the need to protect our community against the federal overreach of ICE," Blouin, one of several Democrats running for Utah's newly drawn 1st Congressional District, said in a statement.

State of play: His bill would also bar state and local law enforcement from collaborating with ICE around "sensitive areas," like churches, hospitals, libraries and courthouses, and from entering health care centers and shelters.

The big picture: The bill comes days after an ICE agent fatally shot 37-year-old Renee Good in Minneapolis during a confrontation between residents and the federal agents earlier this month.

• Outrage over the Minneapolis shooting has spilled into Utah, where dozens of protesters packed a Salt Lake City Council meeting on Tuesday to rally against ICE.

• "Tactics used by ICE under President Trump certainly don't make me feel safer as an American," SLC Mayor Erin Mendenhall said in a statement, calling for peaceful demonstrations, FOX 13 reported.

Zoom out: Similar measures to rein in ICE have also been introduced in other states.

• The Trump administration is suing California over the state's ban on face coverings for most law enforcement officers there, including ICE, arguing that requiring their removal puts agents at risk.
