The woman shot and killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in Minneapolis on Wednesday was identified by news outlets and local officials as 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good.
The big picture: The killing occurred during a confrontation between federal agents and drivers in between ICE vehicles near 34th Street & Portland Avenue. The clash resulted in an agent firing shots into an SUV, video obtained by Axios shows.
What they're saying: "Renee was a resident of our city who was out caring for her neighbors this morning and her life was taken today at the hands of the federal government," members of the Minneapolis City Council said in a joint statement Wednesday.
- Good's mother, Donna Ganger, told the Minnesota Star Tribune that her daughter was "one of the kindest people I've ever known."
- "She was extremely compassionate. She's taken care of people all her life. She was loving, forgiving and affectionate. She was an amazing human being."
What we know: Ganger, who was informed of the shooting late Wednesday morning, said her daughter lived in the Twin Cities with a partner.
- She told the Star Tribune that her daughter was "not part of anything like that at all" in reference to confrontations between ICE and protesters.
- The father of Good's former husband, who died in 2023, told the paper that the couple had a son who is now 4 or 5 years old.
State Rep. Leigh Finke (DFL-St. Paul) issued a statement mourning Good as "a queer woman, a loved and celebrated community member, who has now been stripped away from her family."
Friction point: The shooting has further inflamed tensions between local and federal officials over ICE's unprecedented enforcement operations in the Twin Cities.
- DHS assistant secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement that the woman was a "violent rioter" who "weaponized her vehicle … in an attempt to kill the agents."
- "That is bullshit," Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said in response, adding that the video of the killing showed "an agent recklessly using power."
What we're hearing: Earlier Wednesday, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara said the woman who was killed was not the target of any enforcement activity.
