Salt Lake City's east-west travel gap persists

What they're saying: "It's real clear that there's a really robust mobility challenge in the city," Joe Taylor, a transportation planner for Salt Lake City, told council members during a meeting last week.

• With no public high schools on the west side, students in the area must routinely cross some of the city's most challenging corridors each day, he noted.

By the numbers: City transportation officials surveyed 1,051 participants between May 2-June 30. Most west side residents who took the survey live in Glendale, Poplar Grove and Rose Park.

• 71% of all participants said their travel is impacted multiple times a day or week.
• 50% use overpasses to avoid delays — even if it requires a longer drive.
• Nearly half of west side residents said they can't access goods or services in their neighborhoods.
• Just 6% of jobs in the city's west side are filled by residents who live there.

What we're watching: The study will help transportation planners find solutions to address the east-west gap.
