New Instacart data shared with Axios shows that cream pie is Utah's most "uniquely" popular Thanksgiving pie, based on last year's orders.
How it works: Instacart's findings are based on orders placed via the platform Nov. 22-28, 2024.
The map below doesn't show the most popular pies overall in each state.
Instead, it shows the pies that are most popular in each state compared to the national average, based on order share — uniquely popular, in other words.
Data: Instacart; Note: Calculated by comparing the order share from Nov. 22-28, 2024, of most popular pies within each state, then selecting pies with shares that deviate most from the average; Map: Sara Wise/Axios
By the numbers: Cream pies' share of Utah's orders last year was more than 2.5 times the national average.
Pumpkin also was popular in Utah, claiming about double the national average share.
Between the lines: We're not entirely sure what counts as "cream pie."
Chocolate (Kentucky), coconut custard (New York, Rhode Island and South Carolina), French silk (Midwest) and chess pies (Tennessee) were listed separately.
That leaves ... banana? Pistachio? Or Kim's tentative guess: "Whipped cream and crust? Sounds boring."
Erin's thought bubble: Montana also had a yen for cream pie, so I called my brother Grant, who lives in Arlee, to learn what he'd seen in Big Sky Country.
His reply: "What is cream pie? I dispute this."
