Erika Carlsen launches campaign to represent District 5 in Salt Lake City's

State of play: Mano, who represents the growing district which includes the Ballpark, Central Ninth and Liberty Wells neighborhoods, is backing Carlsen.

• He told the City Cast Salt Lake podcast last year that he'd only seek reelection "if there's not a great candidate to step up and replace me."

Zoom in: Carlsen, 37, is promising to create a community where all residents feel supported. She said her priorities include improving pedestrian safety, promoting green space and supporting local businesses.

• In her day job, she's the director of culture, operations and strategic initiatives for the Trust-Based Philanthropy Project. She's also a community organizer who co-chairs the Ballpark Action Team.

What they're saying: "I'm the granddaughter of immigrants, the daughter of a small business owner, a community advocate, a facilitator and a proud resident of District 5," she said outside the Maven District.

What's next: Carlsen told Axios she plans to knock on every door in her district.
