Salt Lake enjoys some of the quickest drives of all U.S. cities, a new report finds.
By the numbers: It took an average 10 minutes 33 seconds to drive 6 miles in the city center in 2024, according to TomTom's annual Traffic Index, released Tuesday.
In the whole metro area, the average drive time was 9 minutes 46 seconds — the third lowest of 71 U.S. cities analyzed.
Between the lines: Lots of factors go into how quickly you can drive 6 miles in a given city, including traffic congestion, construction and weather.
How it works: TomTom's report is based on a representative sample of data collected by "over 600 million devices" and "over 61 billion anonymous GPS data points around the world," the company says.
The numbers above are based on city centers — "the densest areas that capture 20% of all trips within the city-connected area," per TomTom.
Zoom out: New York, San Francisco and Honolulu are home to the country's slowest driving, the analysis showed.
In the heart of the Big Apple, it took an average of about 30 minutes to drive 6 miles.
