Rep. John Curtis wins Utah Senate race to replace Mitt Romney

• Curtis, widely considered a moderate conservative, will join GOP Sen. Mike Lee in Washington, D.C.
• Given the party's dominance in Utah's statewide races, Curtis was seen as the front-runner to replace Romney after defeating his Republican primary opponents.

By the numbers: Curtis led Gleich 62% to 33%, per unofficial results posted around 11:30pm.

What they're saying: "You elected me to legislate, to advocate and represent you.... My voice will lift your voice. My vote will reflect your values, and together we will make Washington more like Utah," Curtis said during his victory speech Tuesday night in Provo.

• "Don't bother telling me that we can't fix immigration or the budget, I believe we can," he told the packed room.

Context: During his first and only term in the U.S. Senate, Romney made waves as the sole GOP senator to vote to convict former President Trump during his first impeachment trial.

Meanwhile, GOP state Sen. Mike Kennedy (R-Alpine) will succeed Curtis in Utah's 3rd Congressional District after besting Democratic challenger Glenn Wright by a wide margin, according to the AP.

Catch up quick: At the Senate primary, Curtis prevailed over a swath of Republican contenders, including Riverton Mayor Trent Staggs, who was backed by former President Trump, former House Speaker Brad Wilson and Brent Orrin Hatch, the son of the late U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch.
