South Jordan's Daybreak neighborhood reigns supreme over Halloween, with home displays that have gained national renown.
- Yes, but: Navigating and parking can be a hair-raising frightshow all by itself.
The intrigue: Daybreak was master-planned for density and walkability — a blessing and a curse in October.
- The tight clustering of so many of the Salt Lake Valley's best Halloween houses makes it an appealing destination for the whole county. But it isn't equipped for the attendant influx of cars.
Flashback: The small island in Daybreak was overwhelmed by crowds last year after about 20 homes banded together to decorate as Barbieland.
- Police closed the island to outside traffic 11 days before Halloween.
Pro tips: Go on a weekday and arrive at dusk. The crowds get bigger as the night goes on.
- Check the map of Daybreak haunts, note the clusters you want to visit and scan that area for potential parking spots nearby.
Be smart: Instead of backyards, Daybreak has back alleys full of garages, which appear on maps as named streets.
- Set your map to satellite view so you can see in advance when your navigation tool is sending you to someone's garage. You won't have room in these crowds for a U-turn if you need to correct course.
The good stuff
Once you orient yourself, Daybreak lives up to its reputation for theme-park-level displays and immersive haunts.
- Check our map of Halloween houses in Salt Lake County for photos of about 20 of the haunts we saw in Daybreak alone.
Here are three of our favorites:
1. The "Stranger Things" house

The level of detail is astounding, from the replica Creel House stained glass window to the Reagan-Bush '84 campaign sign in the yard.
- This whole block of Lake Terrace Avenue is full of spectacular displays, from the scary '80s house of horrors across the street to the tasteful haunted mansion two doors to the southwest.
- More fun houses themed to "Inside Out" and Willy Wonka are a block to the south, with a fantastic spider house a block and a half to the northeast.
2. The "Beetlejuice" House

Another haunt that hits every beat in its theming, 10832 Fern Ridge Drive has Bob hiding under a desk decorated with a framed photo of Winona Ryder; the flashing "Betelgeuse" sign; and a photo booth with Miss Argentina.
3. Cold Canyon Manor

The glowing, elaborate collection of ghouls and goblins at 4632 Cold Canyon Lane is an annual favorite.
