University of Utah starts its Big 12 era

The University of Utah is now officially part of the Big 12 after 13 years in the dwindling Pac-12 conference.

What they're saying: "We can't wait to bring the U.'s competitive spirit to this dynamic conference," university president Taylor Randall said in a statement on Friday.

State of play: Last August, the university's board of trustees voted unanimously in an emergency meeting to change conferences, joining Arizona, Arizona State and Colorado in their move to the Big 12.

The conference will now consist of 16 teams starting in 2024.

Flashback: During its time in the Pac-12, Utah won 18 conference championships including two national championships in skiing and two back-to-back football championships in 2021 and 2022.
