Where Harris and Trump are visiting most (spoiler: It's not Virginia)

Vice President Harris hasn't visited Virginia since becoming the Democratic nominee, while former President Trump is planning his second visit since August this weekend.
Why it matters: The states presidential candidates visit can signal which ones they think are most up for grabs, and while Trump has repeatedly claimed that Virginia is in play, it's swung blue in presidential elections since 2008.
The big picture: Thanks to the Electoral College, presidential campaigns run through only a handful of states.
- That's why Harris and Trump have made a combined 40 visits to Pennsylvania and Michigan since August but zero to 36 non-swing states, per an Axios analysis of out-of-state trips.
- Both have also mostly focused visits on the other five swing states: Wisconsin, Georgia, North Carolina, Arizona and Nevada.
Between the lines: Trump has held far fewer campaign rallies this time around than in his past runs, but he's still been outpacing Harris in recent weeks.
Zoom in: Before August, Trump had rallied in Virginia twice so far this year.
- The first was in Richmond in March. The second was in Chesapeake with Gov. Youngkin in June.
What's next: Trump is scheduled to hold another just outside of Roanoke on Saturday.
Notes: Our analysis of the candidates' trips is based on press releases and media reports. It doesn't include campaign stops in Washington, DC for Harris or Florida for Trump, since those don't involve trips out of state.
Editor's note: This story has been corrected to say Virginia has swung blue since 2008 (not for 20 years).
