With grocery prices about 30% higher than before the pandemic, many Portlanders may be feeling squeezed and facing food insecurity as Thanksgiving approaches.
The big picture: Alongside local food banks, community kitchens and churches, several Portland-area businesses are also stepping up to serve free hot meals for those in need this holiday.
After Ours

This Vietnamese-inspired vinyl bar and restaurant will be serving to-go plates of fried chicken, mac and cheese, braised greens with a side of rice and gravy from noon to 4pm.
Better Days Cafe
3551 SE Division St.
Anyone can come to this spacious and neighborhood-beloved coffee shop to pick up a free Thanksgiving-inspired sandwich between 8am and 1pm.
Prost!
4237 N Mississippi Ave.
This food cart pod and German biergarten continues its annual tradition of "Prostgiving," serving a buffet-style selection of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing and other fixings in its open-air marketplace patio from 5pm until it's gone.
Proper at Po' Shines Cafe De La Soul

In collaboration with one of Kenton's historic soul food restaurants, this church-based nonprofit will give out boxes of build-your-own Thanksgiving meals — collected from donations from grocery stores and other businesses — from 2–4pm.

All of the holiday staples (with vegetarian options) will be served at this pay-what-you-can Cajun cafe from 4–7pm. Stick around for late-night drinks and karaoke starting right after.
