Three Portland community centers face closure

The big picture: Nearly every city agency faces steep cuts due to inflation, declining city revenue and expiring pandemic-era federal funds.

• Officials have recommended scaling back on regular road maintenance and some homeless services, as well as eliminating summer camp programs and roughly 275 city jobs.

What they're saying: "We have to do everything we can to continue to provide resources, especially in neighborhoods where they really need those resources," Councilor Dan Ryan, who represents District 2 — where two of the centers are located — told KOIN last month.

• Amid pushback from parents and residents, including those who have considered moving if the recommended closures go through, Councilor Steve Novick suggested raising taxes to close the gap on costs.

What we're watching: Mayor Keith Wilson is scheduled to release his proposed budget next month.
