Work from home still reigns in Portland post-pandemic

Roughly 21% of workers in the Portland metro area, or about 278,000 people, were still clocking in from home as of 2023, per the latest census data.
State of play: Although that number has dwindled since pandemic highs (27.5% in 2021, for example), the region still ranks at No. 7 for large metros where WFH reigns.
The big picture: Boulder, Colo.; Austin, Texas; and Raleigh, N.C., were the top three large metro areas where people worked remotely last year.
Between the lines: The high prevalence of remote work over the last four years has in part contributed to higher out-migration patterns and commercial vacancies in the Portland metro, which has led to a loss in tax revenue.
Zoom out: Other metros in Oregon, like Eugene and Salem, had a much smaller remote workforce compared to Portland, with 14.6% and 12.8%, respectively.
