Portland to become million-dollar real estate market by 2033

What they did: Economists from the real estate listings site first analyzed the sales price growth of 100 of the U.S.'s largest metros between 2014 and 2019 (to avoid "jarring anomalies" caused by the recession or the pandemic).

• Then they applied the same growth trajectory to see where prices would be 10 years from now.
• Portland saw the third largest price growth in the country, behind only Boise, Idaho and Salt Lake City, Utah.

By the numbers: In Portland, home prices between 2014 and 2019 rose nearly 45%.

• While the median sales price in 2023 hovered slightly above $500,000, it's projected to hit roughly $1,051,000 by 2033.

The bottom line: Affordable housing availability and new housing stock are already low in Portland and have led many to leave.
