Make like a wizard or a mermaid, go for a sparkly nighttime kayak ride, kick it with sneaker kids, or rock out with the Gen Xers …There's so much to do in Portland this weekend, it's like an affordable mini staycation.
Here are nine events around town to fill your social calendar.
Thursday
🎸 French Cassettes are an SF-based band that belongs in Portland. Part Byrds, part Lemonheads, all melodic fun, this is total date night music. 8pm, Mississippi Studios. $15.
Friday
👟 Slip into Sneaker Week PDX, which kicks off with the K.I.C - OFF Festival, which has everything for the serious sneakerhead: fashion shows, design showcases and DJs. 11am-6pm, through Sunday, Pioneer Courthouse Square. $35.
🎭 Bite down on the JAW Festival, formerly the Just Add Water festival. This showcase of new plays now includes dance and music performances. 7:30pm Friday, times vary Saturday and Sunday, Portland Center Stage at the Armory. Free.
🪄 Wizarding Weekend — it's a Potter takeover at McMenamins Kennedy School. Starts 5pm Friday, 11am Saturday and Sunday. Free entry, Butterbeer and movies extra.
🛶 The Christmas in July Lighted Kayak Parade because why wait until chilly Halloween to be seen on your LED-lit SUP or kayak? 9-10.30pm, Horseshoe Lake, Woodland, Washington. Free.
Saturday
🧜 Portlandia Mermaid Parade, with a beach party at Poet's Beach and an after-party at Fathom. Dress like the civic statue, not like Carrie. Noon to 4pm, starting at Japanese American Historical Plaza, Tom McCall Waterfront Park. Free.
🤘 Project Pabst fest. Billy Idol (Saturday) and Big Thief (Sunday) headline a strong lineup of bands to bake in the sun to. 12:45-10pm. Tom McCall Waterfront Park. 21+, $115 and up.
Sunday
😺 Montavilla Street Fair is the jewel of SE and sits on the fault line between tony Hawthorne and "What was that noise?" Lents. This street fair has great food, music and people. 10am–6pm. Free.
⚽ Portland Timbers vs. Club León of the Mexican Liga MX is Portland's kickoff game in the Leagues Cup. 7:30pm Providence Park. $23 and up.
