How Axios Philadelphia readers would improve SETPA

The general feeling from most responses could be summed up as follows: "SEPTA feels old and clunky, and Philadelphia deserves better."

Transit

Axios Philadelphia readers are not at a loss for ideas when it comes to improving SEPTA.🧼 By the numbers: Making the system cleaner overall was the top vote-getter in our <a class="gtmContentClick" data-vars-link-text="poll" data-vars-click-url="https://www.axios.com/local/philadelphia/2026/09/22/septa-transit-bus-trolley-subway-regional-rail-modernization-plan" data-vars-content-id="5c74363a-9278-40cd-94e0-24cf4ac0cf82" data-vars-headline="How Axios Philadelphia readers would improve SETPA" data-vars-event-category="story" data-vars-sub-category="story" data-vars-item="in_content_link" href="https://www.axios.com/local/philadelphia/2026/09/22/septa-transit-bus-trolley-subway-regional-rail-modernization-plan" target="_self">poll</a>, receiving 20% of the 365+ votes cast. That was followed by:<ul><li>🚆 17% of votes: More Regional Rail service</li><li>🚨 16%: Improve safety</li><li>🏗️ 15%: Expand metro lines to new areas</li></ul>

SEPTA looks to the future with ambitious modernization plan

In the age of remote work and ridership declines, SEPTA is betting people want more service rather than less.

Readers react: Your wishlist for Philly's airport

Philly recently ranked dead last in JD Power's latest customer satisfaction index for large airports.

<a class="gtmContentClick" data-vars-link-text="Philly&#x27;s international airport" data-vars-click-url="https://www.axios.com/local/philadelphia/2026/09/21/philadelphia-international-airport-phl-customer-service-rankings-upgrades-renovations-bathrooms" data-vars-content-id="1dc13d78-2859-461f-b2f5-fd9304e70e61" data-vars-headline="Readers react: Your wishlist for Philly&#x27;s airport" data-vars-event-category="story" data-vars-sub-category="story" data-vars-item="in_content_link" href="https://www.axios.com/local/philadelphia/2026/09/21/philadelphia-international-airport-phl-customer-service-rankings-upgrades-renovations-bathrooms" target="_self">Philly&#x27;s international airport</a> could win some serious brownie points if it were to add more comfortable seating options, per Axios Philadelphia&#x27;s latest poll.

Rock bottom: Philly airport gets low customer satisfaction score — again

Airports are city gateways that are often the first impression out-of-towners get.

Philadelphia International Airport might be spending serious money on upgrades and renovations but travelers remain unimpressed. Why it matters: Airports are city gateways that are often the first impression out-of-towners get. They also serve as powerful economic engines in their own right.

New statue for 30th Street Station is still TBD

The statue for the transit hub's namesake missed the boat on welcoming tourists during Philly's busy summer events.

Why it matters: The statue for the transit hub&#x27;s namesake — deceased U.S. Rep. William H. Gray III — missed the boat on welcoming an influx of tourists during Philly&#x27;s busy summer events.

SEPTA's bus redesign finally arrives

The majority of the changes roll out on Sunday and will shake up more than two dozen routes across the city.

SEPTA&#x27;s bus overhaul gets going this weekend after years of fits and starts. Why it matters: The agency is selling the system&#x27;s first redesign in roughly 60 years as a way to improve service, enhance reliability and attract new riders.

SEPTA's AI-powered cameras generated $14.5M in fines in the first year

Travel times along those bus routes have also improved, the agency says.

SEPTA&#x27;s <a class="gtmContentClick" data-vars-link-text="AI-equipped buses and trolleys" data-vars-click-url="https://www.axios.com/local/philadelphia/2025/04/22/ai-cameras-septa-ppa-philly-school-district" data-vars-content-id="31b7ce1d-2706-487c-af13-d0227c4046af" data-vars-headline="SEPTA&#x27;s AI-powered cameras generated $14.5M in fines in the first year" data-vars-event-category="story" data-vars-sub-category="story" data-vars-item="in_content_link" href="https://www.axios.com/local/philadelphia/2025/04/22/ai-cameras-septa-ppa-philly-school-district" target="_self">AI-equipped buses and trolleys</a> have issued more than 211,000 parking and stopping violations since enforcement began last year. Why it matters: The program isn&#x27;t just generating tickets. SEPTA says keeping bus lanes clear is cutting travel times by 3%–6% on equipped routes.
