Three Philly restaurants — Her Place Supper Club, Friday Saturday Sunday, and Provenance — all brought home a prestigious Michelin Star Monday night.
Why it matters: Philly's restaurant scene was already on a roll, but adding the industry's highest accolades in the U.S. brings elite-level status, elevating the city's dining culture.
Driving the news: The three renowned spots are Philly's first one-star restaurants as the Michelin Guide handed out awards during its ceremony for northeast cities at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts.
- Her Place Supper Club features a creative set-course rotating menu from chef-owner Amanda Shulman, located in the Center City.
- Friday Saturday Sunday is a Black-owned fine-dining spot in Philly's Rittenhouse Square area from husband-and-wife duo Chad Williams and his wife Hanna that's known for a contemporary environment and upscale cocktail program.
- Provenance is a French-Korean fusion restaurant from chef Nicholas Bazik that's nestled in a historic rowhouse, and it's only been open for just over a year.
Zoom out: Several restaurants in Chicago, New York City, D.C. and Boston also took home honors during the ceremony.
Meanwhile, three casual cheesesteak spots brought home a Bib Gourmand award — Angelo's, Dalessandro's and Del Rossi's — which is given for restaurants with more reasonable prices and a simpler style of cooking.
- Other Philly Bib Gourmand winners were 4th Street Deli, Dizengoff, El Chingon, Fiorella, Pizzeria Beddia, Royal Sushi & Izakaya, and Sally.
Plus: More than 20 were "recommended" by Michelin, which don't quite rise to Bib or star-level dining. They are:
- Ambra, Forsythia, High Street, Hiroki, Honeysuckle, illata, Kalaya, Laser Wolf, Laurel, Little Walter, Mish Mish, My Loup, Pietramala, River Twice, Roxanne, Southwark, Suraya, Vedge, Vernick Food & Drink, Vetri Cucina, and Zahav.
And Pietramala's was given the city's first Green Star, which highlights restaurants with top-level sustainability practices.
1 notable snub: Not a single restaurant from restaurant mogul Stephen Starr got an award.
- Philly also was shut out of the handful of Special Awards doled out that night, such as for cocktails and outstanding service.
Worth noting: While Michelin Stars are the top prize, any Michelin award or recommendation is enough to put a restaurant on the map and make it a must-try for locals and tourists alike.
Catch up quick: The Michelin Guide expanded to Philadelphia earlier this year, opening up city restaurants to stars and other honors for the first time.
What's next: Find Philly's Michelin-recommended restaurants in Philly or anywhere on Michelin's website.
- Spot for Michelin plaques in all the Philly restaurants that took home awards.
What we're watching: How Michelin's influence will affect Philly's dining culture.
- Will prices go up and reservations become harder to get? Or will a new vibe take hold of the restaurant scene?
