The Titans fired general manager Ran Carthon yesterday after two losing seasons on the job.
Why it matters: The team is facing a pivotal offseason and the new GM will be in charge of deciding what to do with the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft.
State of play: The Titans went 9-25 under Carthon. After spending $228 million on veteran players last offseason, the team plummeted to the worst record in the entire league, winning just three games.
- Carthon was hired for the job after the team fired longtime general manager Jon Robinson in the middle of the 2022 season.
What they're saying: "It's impossible to ignore that our football team hasn't improved over the past two years," Titans lead owner Amy Adams Strunk said in a statement. "I am deeply disappointed in our poor win-loss record during this period, of course, but my decision also speaks to my concern about our long-term future should we stay the course."
- "We just haven't improved this football team for the last couple of years," Titans president and CEO Burke Nihill said in a statement.
The big picture: Strunk says coach Brian Callahan will keep his job. That means it will be an arranged marriage between Callahan and the new GM.
What's next: Titans president of football operations Chad Brinker will lead the search for a new GM, the team announced.
- Brinker was promoted to the new role a year ago. In a statement yesterday, Brinker spelled out the traits the team will be looking for in a new GM — many of which involved the ability to scout talent and identify how college players will perform in the NFL.
