Former President Trump remains a dominant force in Tennessee politics.
- Republican voters in the Volunteer State once again picked Trump to be the party's presidential nominee by a commanding margin, according to early vote totals.
- He came in well ahead of his only remaining challenger, former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley. The Associated Press called the race soon after polls closed statewide.
- Haley will announce Wednesday that she is suspending her presidential bid, a top Haley source told Axios.
Why it matters: Trump, who was already the favorite to secure the nomination, further cemented his frontrunner status as Tennessee and several other states went to the polls on Super Tuesday.
The other side: Democratic primary voters overwhelmingly backed President Biden, who ran unopposed in Tennessee. The AP also called that race quickly.
- A small portion of Democratic voters in Tennessee selected "uncommitted" on their ballots, according to the early results.
- Voting "uncommitted" has emerged as an option for Democratic voters who oppose the Biden administration's support for Israel's government in its war with Hamas.
The big picture: Neither outcome was unexpected.
- The results point toward a presidential rematch in November.
Flashback: Trump and Biden both won their parties' primaries in Tennessee in 2020. Trump also prevailed in the state's 2016 Republican primary.
